Toyota Tundra next in line for Cummins V8 diesel?

So why should I pay extra for a diesel motor the maintenance and fuel to go with to get barely any extra power.

Its useable torque, you don't have to get up over 4000 rpm's to get it.

With the new diesel engine in the 1500 Dodge Ram is will take 2-3 years to get your money back but thats not too bad. It is a lot better than the 3/4 and 1 tons currently on the market

With a one ton the difference between gas power and diesel power is dramatic. With the numbers they are projection 1/2 tons there really are no difference. It may take longer to recoup with the bigger guys but at least I can see the difference in power.

Its a shame gm killed the 8.1 liter big block. I'm sure the 6.0 is great and the 6.2 is better but you're right - in the 2500/3500 segment its diesel or die.

You cant look at the numbers on paper and say theres no difference. My old 12 valve Cummins had 215 HP and over 400 lbs of torque under 2000 rpm's. There are a lot of gasoline engines that have better numbers that those but my old Dodge would pull a damn house and I could pull Loveland Pass in 5th gear and not miss a beat. Diesels are just a different beast all together.

Because the ram's diesel is a POS

It very well may be, I was merely pointing out that there is not a significant cost upgrade for the diesel option. Hopefully the other 1/2 tons that get a diesel will be priced in the same ballpark

With the Ecoboost in my 2011 F-150 I have 420 pounds of torque at 2K rpm. 390 at the rest of the usable rpm. Much less expensive than running a diesel.
Don't have to change fuel filters every 10K, 40 cents a gallon difference between 87 unleaded and diesel where I live. The F250s are known to get over 20mpg, but I get right at 20mpg so it's still cheaper. I haven't towed anything heavy yet, so don't know where that will go.

Someone said the Dodge diesel is a pos. It's not even out yet, so how would they know?

Its out in the Grand Cherokee but in very limited numbers. My guess is they don't know and were just trashing it to trash it but I could be wrong

I love the ecoboost F150's I have driven but I have a couple buddies that have them that have had issues so I have held off for the time being

This is all I was trying to point out earlier. That the current engines in the 1/2 tons are more then able to do the job and cost a lot less. Now if you told me That these diesels were going to produce 500 ft lbs of torque and 25 mpg then maybe worth it. The numbers I have seen have not reflected anything better then the ecoboost or chevys, or dodges new V8.

This diesel has been in service in Europe and elsewhere (Aus) for several years. It is new to the US market, but not new.

What you can learn from the web suggests that it is a good motor. Nothing I have read supports the POS quip.

The dodge 1500 diesel is rated to tow 2k more than the v6 and 50 lbs less than the v8 but with 25 mpg highway. Kind of an in the middle choice.

The 6.2 has similar power from a practical stand point. It's only when you get to huge loads that I miss the 8.1L, but there's a diesel for that.

Why not put a low compression 4.6L V8 in a half ton with a tiny little 5psi turbo (or no turbo at all)? Less stress and cost than the ECO, less displacement and guzzling than the 5.7L. The 5.7L in the Tundra is epic overkill. Nice for those days you want to wear a flatbilled Monster Energy hat and do some Raptor silly stuff, but way overkill for just about everything else.
-
I'd still rather have an anemic old 16v 4.6 in a new F150 and some serious gears than the ECO. That's just me.

Unless this diesel is tiny, slow, lightweight, and 100% reliable.....I don't see it's purpose. Slow and fuel effiecient ain't an easy sell to the regular Momo's, and a larger displacement diesel that fast really does very little more than the current engines. If the ECO wasn't fast, Ford wouldn't sell a single one on the idea of "fuel ec". And that's too bad, smaller, slower diesels that still have enough low end grunt to get the job done, with decent Fuel ec, would be awesome little trucks.

It's only a $2750 upgrade for the Diesel engine in the Ram 1500 diesel that's coming out this year
Bummed with Ram's decision to go with the Italian diesel over the Cummins. I guess that's what happens at the corporate level with the Fiat buyout.
At the shop I use I frequently see Cummins engines with 300K on them running well. A guy came in with a 24v the other day w/445K on it. It had a leaking head gasket that turned out to be an unusable head after magnafluxing. New head and a block resurfacing and it was back in action. Original stock injectors too. You just can't beat Cummin's products.
