I just installed a GOBI stealth rack on to my JK. I was not about to go onto the roof to put my bike on a fork-mount carrier, and I do not like hitch mount/spare tire racks for off road-situations.
So with a Kuat Dirtbag 15mm fork adapter: http://kuatracks.com/en/products/accessories/the-dirtbag/
my drill, and about $3 in hardware, I was able to do this:

I re-used the ladder mount hardware and hole on the left side, and drilled the base of the fork mount, and the mounting plate for the stairs.
It attaches thusly:

Sorry for the terrible pictures. If there is interest, I'll get more...it's pretty straight forward. It's also pretty sturdy. I can shake the car by grabbing onto to handlebars. When I have some spare time, I'm going to paint the hardware and figure out how to secure the rear wheel. I'm currently using long toe-clip strap, lashed around to tow hook. Not too glamorous. Ideally, the bike would sit closer to the center of the car, because the handlebar sticks out from the side a bit (about the same as the rear wheel did when it was in my spare tire rack) but it will work for now.
