'08-current Super Duty truck mirror conversion for E-Series

Progress! After 4 rounds of 3D printing to get the power fold (in and out) positions dialed, I now have some REAL parts to work with. CNC'd goodness!

The "A" and "B" are mirror images of each other. There's a 3D printed part in the middle as an example. 4 of each for a set of mirrors.

Next up is the laser'd parts for the mounting base and the first round of 3D printing for the shroud to cover up all the internals.

Thanks for following! Nice truck! Did you end up splicing the harness or did you find factory connector housings and terminals? After a lot of digging through catalogs and drawings, I was able to identify and purchase all of the connectors used in the super duty related to the mirrors. They work out to a few bucks per connector vs. buying the factory pigtails for $40 (which aren't even 100% correct).

hey mgm I have never posted before so please excuse my in experience.I am swapping on power fold mirrors on my 2000.Can you post the part numbers or where to get the plugs?this is the only forum that has anything on these plugs .Thanks for all the time put in on this

Are you talking about putting '08-current truck mirrors on a truck? If so, this link is pretty informative about doing the swap for trucks. I posted part numbers for the factory connectors in post #395

Unfortunately some of the connectors are out of stock at the vendors I know of. You can find similar connectors (of the same series by the same manufacturer) that you can swap out (they use the same terminals so you can just swap wires). The factory connector on my set of mirrors is a 22 position connector (out of stock) but I purchased 20 position connectors that were readily available. Mouser.com is a good place for finding automotive connectors.

I'm a customer and will want the "all the works" version. I have a '99 E-350. Seems to me there's a huge problem finding where to wire everything to the OE harnesses.

Any idea when you'll be past the prototype and able to sell me a set?

Thanks JCTex for following along with my project! Just this weekend my wife told me to hurry up and finish the mirrors because she's ready for some exterior bling on the van! What timing you both have!

I'm ordering parts this week for building up the mounting base and I'll have a rough model of the shroud shortly after I get the base put together. I'd really like to wrap up the prototype by the year's end. I have some time off during the holidays so I'll get a lot done in the coming weeks.

A lot of the problems the Super Duty truck guys have with the wiring can be attributed to not having a wiring diagram and a flood of misinformation in all of the forums. I'll take the mystery out of it with some clear instructions for others to follow.

Nice! I have an EVTM (wiring diagrams for 2000 econoline vans) if you need any references, I can send them over if you don't already have them.

Ditto me 2 for a '99.5 manual. However, I studied it in "great detail" and found wiring only for making the mirror wiggle around. To add all the doohickies and thingamagigs like heat, folding, and memory, I think Mike's going to have to tap into some hot wires being used for other stuff.

You're right JC, some circuits will need to be added. Power for each of the functions (though I don't necessarily think all of them need their own circuit), taps into turn signals and park lights and some relays added. The fuse panel in my van has some open spots that I'm going to use, I just need to get some new terminals to add in there.

The power fold has a special relay and for the heated mirrors I've sourced an adjustable time delay relay. I'm using factory switches for my van but the shape of the newer door panels is better suited for those switches than the older panels. The factory parts aren't necessary though. One could make everything work with aftermarket switches too.

Do you recommend I find (or buy new, if I can't) 2008-later panels w places already there for the modernized switches? I suspect the panels will fit my 99.5.

I can't fully recommend something I'm not 100% sure about. I've heard of people swapping the door panels but I've not seen it done with my own eyes to verify. It might work just fine, I just haven't done it myself. Maybe someone who has done it can chime in???

The new door panels don't have places already designated for the telescoping switch or the mirror heat switch but there are more opportunities for placement on the new panel vs. the old. I'm going to have to modify the door panel a little to get things to fit like I want. Hopefully my plan works...there isn't a lot of room to work with and the factory switches are bulky on the backside of the panel.

There aren't a whole of things about this project that are "easy".
