"Motoring enthusiasts are mourning the end of the "Landy" after more than 60 years of serving the needs of farmers, explorers and devotees of off road driving.
After 67 years production of the iconic Land Rover Defender is to come to an end in just over two years.
The last of the vehicles, which have given decades of service to, among others farmers and safari guides, will roll off the production line in December 2015.
It is estimated around two million Land Rover Defenders have been bought since the car first appeared in April 1948, when it came in any colour as long as it was green.
Even the Queen has been pictured at the wheel of a Defender.
The Defender has as fallen victim to the tougher environmental and emissions laws across the world and any successor will have to be radically different from its predecessors.
Tata, the Indian owners of Jaguar Land Rover, have yet to decide what will replace the rugged but hardly comfortable vehicle.
A prototype successor was unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show. But no decision on a commercial version will to into production or whether it will be called a Defender has been made."

In one way it makes sense... any replacement will be a major change (safety/and much less so, environmental) I have always hated the Big 3 keep bringing back old names with boring cars - starting with the Mustang II. If it's not a Defender, move on, call it something new. But Dendy I agree, Sad. A true classic across the world.

If the JK wrangler is any proof people are willing to deal with the discomforts of front and rear solid axles and pay a premium to have them, the new defender can't be far off from the tree it fell from

X2. If they can revise the Defender as well as Jeep did the Wrangler, then it'll be fine.

But unlike the jeep, I hope they won't be plagued with the constant issue of spontaneously combustion. Among other issues.

Here's another article confirming December 2015 as the end of Defender production...in England, at least. European emissions controls and safety standards are the reasons why.

"A Jaguar Land Rover spokesman confirmed that the production of Defender will stop at the end of 2015.

'A replacement vehicle will join the Land Rover range, but the Defender in its current format is coming to an end,' the spokesman added."

Land Rover parent Tata will continue to build Defender-like vehicles for sale in South Asia and Africa. Here's a look at just a sample of the light utility vehicles made by Tata today.
