I have both radios and I would highly recommend the 7900. Especially if mounting in your truck because of the detachable faceplate. Also the 7900 has 70cm band as well. There are lot's of 440 repeaters around that you'd be missing with the 2900.

EDIT: You know if I could do it all over again I'd get the 8900. I know it's more money but the dual radio and cross band repeater features are worth it. That being said I have a FT2900R for sale if you're planning on saving some money :sombrero:

^nice,

Yeah the Dual band is enticing..
My other concern is the heatsinks on the 2900R running hot when installed in the cubby infront of the shifter.

Nice overhead console, I might have to do that some day for gauges and communication equipment.

For now mine is occupying the DIN slot where the CB used to be. The Yaesu FT-1900R is really small, requiring a filler plate to hide the hole. I went with perforated steel to provide component cooling and to make the audio easier to hear.

Keep them coming please :coffeedrink:

I'm considering the Yaesu FT-2900R vs the FT7900R, one of the major differences is the detach faceplate.. so seeing other rigs is helping very much.

The detachable face plate is nice if you're cramped for room but I don't like how chubby the face is. Not to mention the mic input is on the side of the face. I've got an 8800R and I wanted to keep the face plate on the radio to keep it all in one place, keep the wires to a minimum and install it in the dash.

I made a data cable extension and incorporated that to a dash mount along with an aux USB charging port in the blank spot making full use of the DIN slot. I took a wall mount data box and soldered on a short pigtail.

Then cut off what I didn't need so I could mount it in a plate.

Here is the finished product. I was able to keep the face attached while still having a forward facing mic input.

Here is a similar install of my 2800R (the radio before the 8800R).

Here are some pics of my install:

I declined to mount the radio head. Instead I just put some velco on it and when it's dark I stick it on the dash, or it just sits next to the shifter when it's sunny out. This lends itself well to, if my wife is driving and I am shotgun I have easy access for control. I could even work the radio from the back seat if I had to.

I pulled out the drivers seat and mounted the body with zip ties under the seat.

I ran 10 gauge wire from the Auxillary battery in the bed along the frame (and the coax) and came up through a gromment right under the drivers seat.

Installing was fun, but let me tell you. I pulled an all-nighter to get it done because I had no time due to work and family duties!

I also have two 5W road pro speakers which are resting behind the factory cup holders in the front dash console thing. They fit nice and snug in there. :)

Yep Tech Deck from BirdDawg, but instead of using the supplied screws for the side mounts i used RivNuts so its more durable and stronger (IMO)
Alot of Radio History for me in those Pics, Never install a NMO mount into the Factory Sat antenna, ive been plagued with problems after reinstalling the factory Sat antenna. I just recently installed a NMO mount from BreedLove, Love his mounts. Current Radio RIG is a FTM350AR, previously had a IC-V8000, TM-VD710A. One days ill purchase a HF antenna and get my TS-480HX in the truck.
