I went to America's Tire (Discount Tire) on Saturday 3/15, while the discount code was in effect, and was told they would match Discount Tire Direct Ebay price with the discount code, i.e., $160 ea. for the ST/Maxx LT265/75R16 and $140 ea. for the Cooper Discoverer AT3 (bringing the price to $120 ea. after the $80 prepaid Visa rebate). They couldn't quote the ST/Maxx in 255/85R16 because there was no inventory showing in the entire Discount Tire system. I told them that I couldn't pick a tire until I had the price for the 255/85, and they agreed to honor all of the prices this week while they confirmed pricing and availability of the 255/85R16 ST/Maxx (good news - yes, they can be here in 2-3 days; bad news - $237 ea.)
At $237 ea. for the 255/85R16 ST/Maxx and $160 ea. for the 265/75R16, the best bang for my buck is the 265/75R16 ST/Maxx which measures a true 32". I was tempted to try the AT3, which is better matched to the weight of my rig with a "C" load rating and a great buy at $120 ea., but the tread design and 3-ply sidewalls of the ST/Maxx are better suited to the sharp volcanic rock and logging debris common to my area. Besides, the ST/Maxx looks like an overlanding tire should look.
So today (3/19), I went back to America's Tire to order my ST/Maxx tires. Unfortunately, I had to work a bit to get them to honor the price as the assistant manager I spoke with Saturday had conveniently succumbed to selective amnesia. A brief and pleasant conversation with the real manager solved the problem and my LT265/75R16-E Cooper Discoverer ST/Maxx tires will be here next week at $160 ea. + mounting/balancing, tax, etc.
