Yep, get a little better ground clearance if you do both 2.5 lift and 255's. ;)

Haha thanks. I'm trying not to lift the rear and I'm sure 2.5 in front without any modification to the rear pack would look very pre-runner. Plus maybe I'm wrong but the only way to increase the clearance is with the tire size not the lift.

Tundras (and most pickups) have a bit of rake from the factory. With a 2.5" lift and a bit of weight in the bed might get you somewhat level, or you may find out 2.5" has it perfect,
each truck is a little different so you don't know until you install it.

If you get adjustable coil-overs, you can typically adjust from 0-3" of lift...so you can get it to sit exactly how you want. I have my Tacoma with just a bit of rake in the back, so when I load it, the headlights aren't pointing skyward. Have Camburg CO's up front and Old Man Emu in the rear.

Coil-over lift will gain you clearance...it is those drop down bracket lifts that don't. At least in the front.

Thanks for the clarification clutch.

Are there any other suspension combos or tires I should be considering for what I do? I run duratracs on my work truck and if they came in a narrow 33 with a 3 ply sidewall I would be sold.

You're welcome.

Oh tire selection/suspension choice is a subjective thing (and how much you want to spend)...what works for me out here in the desert won't work for you in Maine. I did grow up in PA so kinda similar to Maine.

I have run BFG, Goodyear, and Coopers (both all terrain and mud tires) over the years...I like Cooper the best. It is all relative though. I am running BFG AT's right now...purchased them because I got a good deal on them (half price) they don't perform nearly as well as the Cooper STT's I had...off or on-road. BFG's do wear like iron though.

You may like the Cooper ST's, the STT is better performing off-road tire, but are a bit noisy on pavement and have to be rotated often to keep them wearing even.

Some guys love the Cooper ST Maxx, can only get it in an E rating though. Some are ok with that.

Suspension...I think the Bilstiens you mentioned in the first post will be fine. Could always go with a nicer coilover such as Fox, Camburg, Icon etc...don't want to spend the money for new ones, can always pick them up used and rebuild them...check sites like TTORA or Race Desert.

Middle ground are the Old Man Emu's...pretty much the standard go to suspension on this website. Believe you have to go with different spring rates to adjust your height/ride quality with those.

I do like the cooper stt and I wish they came in a tall skinny. I'm very wishy washy on the st in that size as they just seem soooo narrow plus I'm looking for more of a mt tread. I thought km2 because I have run them in the past and for most of what we do they work well. They ride very well on the pavement and on the higher speed dirt roads but when we be off of those they still performed well. I was going to try siping them if I got them again since they were scary on packed snow or ice.

I agree with Clutch. I installed 5100's with OME 885 coils, without lifting the rear at all yet...I gained approx. 2.75" in front, which left me about 2" higher than the rear...After a bit over 5K miles, the front has settled between 1.5"-1.75"....So its almost level with the rear.

And for locating used suspension components, make sure to check the 1st Gen classifieds on www.TundraSolutions.com ... coilovers, springs and UCAs pop up regularly...

You can get the STT's in a 255, but if you're happy with KM2's and they work well...stick with those.

Ahhh

yeah I only see the STT in a 255/70

Didn't know if maybe you had some inside info for us clutch :)

Now for some completely different questions: I want to move the diff breathers for those times I have to cross a flowage. Rear diff is easy but is the front diff already in the engine compartment?

Yep, front diff breather is in the engine bay.

Thanks I'll take a look just to be sure. I've got another question pertaining to air bags if anyone has experience with them. Do they provide any lift on their own or do they just keep the truck from filing when loaded? I assume they only come into play when the rear leaf really starts to flex.

Also on the stock 16 hole steelies do the different gen tacomas have different back spacing or is that just for the alloys and all the steel spares are the same?

^^ I'm pretty sure the steelies for '05-(to at least '11), have 5.5" backspacing, IIRC...I KNOW for a fact that it IS 1" more than previous Tacos/Tundras...I could be wrong, but I would have to assume the spare steelies would have the same BS as the alloys/regular steel wheels....

I bought some '05+ 5 star steelies for my Tundra...Unfortunately I didnt do enough research before hand, and they ARE 1" more BS than the earlier Toyota wheels...So I HAVE to run wheel spacers now, since I am running 255/85's on them... :(
