Noob on a trailer

Thanks Colorado.

Well, project came pretty much to a screeching halt - each coat of primer and paint have to wait 24 hours before applying the next coat. That means 5 days total (2 coats primer, 3 coats paint). Looks like I won't be bringing it with me to NW Overland Rally

Bummer!

And yes the WA inspections are a joke. I had all the required paperwork, and they didn't charge me tax on mine, They looked at the receipts and most had tax, so they just used them for a value.
Here is the "official" requirements, only thing I really saw was you can't weld on the safety chains directly, and need mud flaps that go beyond the center line of the axle. Neither of which were obviously looked at at my inspection either.

Are they charging for value? I read that the fees were based on axle weight.

No they just needed a value for the title, thats what they told me anyway. The State Patrol Officer stamped the major receipts, and they added everything up at the DOL. But did not charge me tax, as it has been paid on many of the items. She said that it also was a new trailer, and not a sale, so no sales tax needed to be charged since I wasn't selling it.

There was a hefty inspection fee, title fee and blah blah. Mine ended up around $150 OTD

Since were in the same county (People's Democratic Republic of King County), I'll have the same daunting fees :-(

Just got back from the NW Overland Rally - totally stoked. Awesome time, and saw many kewl rigs. Spent most of today catching up on work that I couldn't do for the past five days, but was still able to get the first coat of paint on the top of the trailer (I found my jack stands so I was able to take off the wheels, which made painting things much easier). Sorry, no pix - I left my camera on overnight at the rally and haven't had time to even unload it and charge the battery. Soon, soon.

trailer 2nd coat.jpg

Got the second coat on today (still need to get another coat and then attack the bottom). Hope to be done painting by Monday, and then I'll attach the cargo box (which I start work on by Thursday) and lights (always a challenge for me).

Thanks java.

Looks like the box will have to hold off until next week - I couldn't find any good water based contact cement locally, so had to order it from Uline (they're shipping from IL).

Picked up the door latches today. Guess I'll need to get some more hinges soon.

I figure I'll start wiring as soon as I've gotten the bottom painted (3 coats - so that should be done by Sunday).

Well, time to step outside and sweat a river while I put on the last top coat (temps are all the way up in the 60s!:suning:).

All wired up (and it works!). Cut all the panels for the box, so it's just a matter of cementing them all together and laying the fiberglass on the edges. Hope to finish that up tomorrow. Pix to follow.

glue up 1.jpg

This is how I'm building the sides - 1" foam sandwiched between 1/8" ply, glued with 3M water based contact cement (muy expensivo!)

As I usually have to wait a half hour between applying the contact cement and waiting for it to set, and since I only have so many sawhorses and clamps, I've got some free time between panels. I've actually completed 3 of the 5, so should be done with all glue ups tomorrow. Stilll need to cut doors, install hardware, glue and fiberglass the panels together, and then primer and paint. Otherwise, getting there (I better - the state patrol inspection is on Tuesday :yikes:).

Box is now glued together. I'll be fiberglassing all the edges tomorrow, and then getting it weighed. If I have time, I'll apply some water sealing before Wednesday's inspection. Long, hot day.
