Pickuptrucks.com put 2500 series HD gas engine pickups through a series of tests. The Ram 2500 HD was the winner, Chevrolet 2500 HD came in second, and the Ford F250 Super Duty was third.

The test results were extremely close. The Ford actually won the instrumented tests by a very small amount, but lost to the other trucks when the test drivers' subjective ratings were included. Ford is refreshing its HD trucks for 2015, so next year the results might be different.
I think any of these vehicles would make a good platform to carry a heavy camper.
These used to be called 3/4 ton trucks, trucks with single rear wheels and more carrying and towing capacity than the base "1/2 ton" pickups. Today's trucks are much more capable than similar models of 20 or 30 years ago. For example, all three entrants in this contest have cargo capacity more than 2700 lb, and tow ratings of more than 12,000 lb.
