I'm so overdue for an adventure! Maybe South Dakota for the test? Probably some good backroads there. You don't hear much about it.

Just spent a couple days across South Dakota. The Black Hills and the Badlands area is nice, but winter is here now. Winter is here to stay.....

The sand hills of Nebraska is also an interesting area that is mostly overlooked. Miles and miles of dirt roads out there.

I just did 4 10" on the roof rack of a 2014 Rubicon X I built for the ranch I run. The biggest problem I found was that after driving with them on for a while and you turn them off the vehicle headlights seem like a 1/3 AAA flashlight....

So true about how dim normal headlights seem when you turn off the Rigids. You might need to post a photo of the jeep you built up.

LOL!

Quite the drive for both of us.
How about Nebraska instead? ;)

Nathanael, do you have any Nebraska backcountry pics?

Here are a couple I found.

Nathaniel,

Nice! Looks like lots of rollers. Like the desert, it looks like the kind of terrain that one doesn't truly experience until you get out of the car and walk out into it.

Thanks for the pics. How many states have you crossed throughout your travels?

Just did a great SW dirt route

Greetings Gents,

I just got back from a nice little solo 9 day road trip in the camper. It ended up being 2000 miles total with 1600 being on dirt roads in NM and AZ. I ended up crossing 13 mountain ranges, mostly in the snow. Attached are a few pics.

You'll see I've done a few mods to the camper. The big one is that I'm no longer carrying the dual spares on the roof; it handles better without them. With the help of a friend and his CNC plasma cutter I made a nice rear end tire/tool carrier. I also added the bush cables to the front of the vehicle. I'm surprised at how much the cables actually got used along with the rub rails along the top edge of the camper. Once I'm done with all the modifications to the exterior rail/bumper system I'll pull everything and paint it.

Inside I completely redid the wiring of all dual battery/auxiliary electrical loads using a Blue Sea System fuse block and 4 position battery selector switch. While doing this I upgraded the wiring between both batteries using a 2/0 gauge wire size. The simple system is now bombproof and I was able to avoid any "smart" charging apparatus. I can now jump start myself with the flick of a switch.

I have to give a sincere thanks to Maxtraxx. I tried blowing thru deep snow while crossing the Plains of San Augustine (no trees or shrubs to winch off of) and ended up high centered on my skid plates. The Maxtraxx made quick work of the situation and I was on my way.

My mechanic was correct, the 290GDT's power is even more insane below 2000'.

Looks like a great trip. Good to hear the MaxTrax operated well for you, those and a shovel are my sole recovery devices.

Just noticed your last post had a question I did not answer.

According to the map on the wall I have covered 44 states. Not bad considering I am not a "peak bagger" sort of traveler.

It was indeed nice. I got so relaxed it was kind of strange. Saw some beautiful country. Went for several days without speaking.

I agree on the maxtrax. If I had to give up the winch or the maxtrax and a shovel the winch would be gone!

That's a lot of states!

Hope all is well and that your having fun.

LOVE IT!!! Have fun!!

Greetings. I have been reading this forum for several months now and it has helped me tremendously in the process of learning about my recently purchased G Wagen Expedition vehicle (and expedition vehicles in general). Thank you all for that. It is a pretty cool and well executed build. I've taken it out a couple of times now and have explored about 2000 miles of New Mexico back roads. About half of the miles being on the dirt in very remote parts of the state. She runs like a champ. I started with a big list of things I want to do to it and an equally sized list of places I'd like to explore. I've already covered at least a dozen roads/places that have been on the list for years and have been steadily modifying and outfitting so as to be well prepared. Attached are a few pics.
