4wd went hay wire

We were leaving the house this evening when a snow storm decided to throw down about 4 inches in about an hour. Long story short I was in 4h and went to put it in 4llc when all the 4wd lights started flashing and a chime started going off. It wouldn't go into 4llc and I tried to shift back through the t.c. gears but it wouldn't engage into any gear. I was stuck in no gear and couldn't move at all. It finally went into 4h but not before alot of lights flashing, chiming, and grinding. I did find out on the way home when I had to use 4llc down a mountain of icy road that to shift into 4h you do not need to be in neutral but if you wanna shift into 4hlc and 4llc you do.

At least...I think.

Anyone have the same issue when trying to shift into 4hlc and 4llc

So I actually had that happen on my trip to Big Bear too where I was in 4LLC for a while but when it got tough, it started beeping a lot. I have seen some mentions in other threads (can't remember here or if it was elsewhere) that it was pretty much the software "deciding" that it doesn't lock on Low anymore and reverts it back to 4HLC. I usually just have to swap back to normal 4WD and then back to 4LLC, but it generally didn't stick.

But maybe some others with Gen 3's can help shed some more light on it.

Man it scared my wife to death. She thought we were gonna slide down a mountain. I tried to replicate it last night sitting in the drive and I found out you cant be in drive and switch to 4llc you have to be in neutral, same thing when shifting out of 4llc. I also found out that fiddling with my system last night caused my 2h lights to flash...should have listened to my when she said..."just leave it alone!!!!"

Do you have a sticker on the DS door explaining how to use the system?

Did you go to 4HLC and let it settle in before stopping, neutral, then engaging 4LLC?

Tis reasons like this that I prefer the old mechanical method.

And, all this is why my wife dislikes the G3. She thought she'd love it, but now no, she does not. She prefers the old Monty Sport when the going gets rough.

Pretty sure this is the same with any transfer case. The Hi and LO ranges do not have syncros, so you need to be stopped and out of gear to smoothly shift between the 2 ranges.

Yeah you got it, you have to be in Neutral. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened to us as well!

Maybe you don't have the door sticker with the instructions any longer. Here is a copy from my Gen 3.
