Rebel Off Road - Deal of the Week

Hello Expedition Portal

We have a new weekly promotion going on at Rebel Off Road called "Deal of the Week." This is a weekly promotion that will highlight a specific product or groups of products that will be sold at a discounted rate too low to advertise. Subscribe to this thread to stay current on what the Deal of the Week is for that given week.

This week

Mother nature can be brutal and unforgiving, so give yourself the one up with the baddest spork around! The Krazy Beaver Shovel is one serious piece of utilitarian delight. Whether you’re digging a fox hole, entrenching your fortified position, or just straight digging to China, nothing stands a chance against the Krazy Beaver.

This 40” shovel breaks down to 20” so it can fit in a backpack or duffle bag, and at only 4.5lbs you won’t believe you’re carrying a full sized spade. The head of this vicious survival tool is sandblasted and powder coated to prevent rust, and is comprised of 13 gauge steel with reinforced teeth, so rest assured this spork will take some serious abuse. Now bring on the apocalypse!

The Krazy Beaver, now available from Rebel Off Road. Special discounts this week only! Supplies are limited so order yours now before this deal passes you by!

I know shovels and tools and to me, this looks like an over-priced gimmick.

Gimme an angle grinder, a file, a vice and I can make the same thing out of a $20 tempered carbon steel shovel. While the basic design looks good, I don't feel like your powder coating will stand up well, nor offer any real protection when digging through rooty soil, which is the point of having those forks. Are the "forks" edge sharpened to cut through roots? It doesn't look like it to me, which is the whole purpose to the forks and the power coating won't allow for a good edge anyways. Tempered carbon steel and a good enamel paint would be a better combo and offer just as much protection as the powder coating in this application. The powder coating is good in theory, but in practice, it just dulls the cutting edges. As it looks in the pics, I'd have to take a good file to those edges to remove a lot of that powder coating to make this a truly effective shovel.

Powder coating is an excellent corrosion protection method, but not for a cutting tool, which is what this shovel is supposed to be. I'd like to see how that edge holds up digging through rooty soil and not just stabbing into a 2x4. I would NOT recommend this shovel to anybody.

Probably good feedback to send to the manufacturer of the shovel, doubt Rebel Offroad is going to be able to make those kind of changes whether they are needed or not.
