I'll just keep my hook and steel rope. I've had the synthetic rope before, and it's kind of a pain to keep clean and always having to worry if you are dragging it over a rock. It does save a lot weight though and its very nice when you have to to use your winch. But lets be honest, with a Land Rover, Center Diff lock and an ARB locker, who needs a winch?
Having CDL and lockers means I use my winch even more!! :D

Interesting, I have had synthetic for years and never had issue with it getting too dirty. The main reason I run it is safety.

As far as why one needs a winch with center dif + locker: mechanical sympathy, save the truck whenever possible for the times when you cannot. At least that's what I try to live by.

Winch is handy to pull other folks out though. I don't necessarily want the bling, but I won't hold it against you if I need your help. To each his own, I agree factor 55 may be bling, but we all have our own choices.

You aren't wheeling hard enough :)

OR YOU CAN'T DRIVE. The only time I've needed a winch badly was when I had a Jeep Commander. The Disco and previous Range Rover are much better vehicles. I have yet to use my winch on my Disco to free myself. I use the winch to unload broken cars off trailers though. So I guess its helpful in that respect. I crawled up an obstacle with my disco and my M101 trailer that a Jeep LJ (with 33" tires) had to winch up. So I would say my driving skills are much better than par for the course.

If you want the F55 product great. But to say it's safer than an appropriate hook is silly. If you use any product inappropriately it can be unsafe. And the whole "closed system" thing....marketing gimmick. Like the way it looks? Great. Helps you remember to rig up your line and connections appropriately? Super. Don't make it out to be more than it is.

I run one of these f55 thimbles on my setup. It looks cool. It keeps the winch line in place at the fairlead. Doesn't make marks on my bumper like a raw shackle or hook since it's rubber backed. Provides a nice end point to pull winch line out.

LOL... humor is so hard to write. And so easily misconstrued on forums.

Truth! Back to the original topic, I confess that I've got one of these Factor 55 gizmos on my Defender. Honestly, it is there because it looks good (IMHO). I've used it winching a friends hunting rig out of some serious mud and it didn't really add any perception of safety to the recovery. In fact, I found that the spread between the ears of one of my shackles was insufficient to fit over the F55 thimble. That was annoying and had me digging in my recovery bag for another shackle. So, if you are using one, be sure to check the tolerances with your other recovery bits before you need to use them in an unpleasant situation :sombrero:
