Onboard Air / Compressors - Got one in your Montero?

Let's see your setups.

I'm looking to do one of the Puma compressors, probably with the tank separated and mounted elsewhere. Would love to see how you guys have set up yours, for inspiration - doesn't matter what Gen your Monteo is, show it off!

I don't have any pictures but a York compressor is by far the best setup i've used so far. Compact, tankless and you can actually run air tools off it continuously plus they're cheap. There are a few other setups that work pretty well, i typically use the drive around on 3psi because the OBA setups i've had are slow. I built one with an 8 gallon tank once on the cheap, it would run an air tool for a few seconds and then take a few seconds to charge back up. it would be good for like lug nuts or just breaking loose suspension parts out on the trail. It was still pretty slow on tires because the compressor was just that little red one most people use.

The good OBA's are big, bulky and expensive, the smaller ones are about as good as a stand alone compressor and slow. So given those options i just air down to 20 psi and suffer a little offroad so i can still be highway OK or i drop down to 10 and just drive slow going home. Then i forget to air up everyday forever and don't realize i'm flat until the truck sits long enough to flat spot or i leak down to 0-3psi and i can really feel the squish onroad that i air back up. If i ever do another OBA i will do a York compressor and no tank because they take up no cab space, they're reliable and they are silly fast which i like.

Lloyd has an awesome OBA system which is a York Compressor running on an aircraft starter motor, i forget who makes it but it's pretty awesome except it takes up a ton of space.

I like the traditional engine driven York setup

I mounted up a MV50 wired to a Blue Sea fuse block and ran it to a 50A toggle in one of my blank accessory caps. Mounted the pump where the 3rd row seats used to bolt in, the original hose reaches all tires no problem. Not as fancy as some, but it gets the job done and was inexpensive (under $100). This is for tire duty only, obviously not for tools, suspension, etc.

How do you guys feel about Powertanks? I'm leaning that direction for my rig after seeing some locals use them in the woods, very impressive.

Co2 is awesome, I have a nitrogen setup as well. Awesome, awesome, awesome! I've had rough luck running air tools off of them though, way awesome for tires though.

Mine is mounted like Mumifieds, but with a tank on the other wheel well and I like it. Hose is real handy. Mine is an Oasis. Depends on what you want to do, for Air tools go big with a tank and skip the CO2. For just filling up your tires its a good option. I prefer to have endless supply though.

I built my ARB compressor into a cavity in my drawer system. I have this connected using Stainless steel tubing to a quick connect mounted at the rear of the drawers.

I use a Powertank and love it. However, EVERYONE wants to use it, so it never lasts very long. However part 2, the folks I wheel with typically compensate me for its use. It's pretty sweet being able to do all 4 wheels in less than 5 min. But, it costs between $20 to $35 to refill, depending on where I go and who's manning the counter. I fill about 16 tires or so per tank, could do more, probably, but I am cautious.

The Powertank regulator, hose, and gauge chuck are excellent. The tank is way over priced. Any tank will do, but splurge on the other parts.

Or get the York set up. That is the best thing possible. There's a company that sells it as a kit. Kilby maybe?

Good lord, that's an impressive setup. I hope you have a few fire extinguishers in that truck also (not doubting your wiring skills).
