I had FJ 60 Land Cruisers, then a 91 Toyota 4WD truck, and now a 3rd gen 4Runner.
The 4Runner is small. It holds less stuff inside than my 91 reg cab 4WD P/U that had a camper shell.
The 3.4 V6 in the 3rd gen 4R is not underpowered, it is adequately powered. If you want it to mimic the way you can drive a BMW, then, yes...it's underpowered for that. But driving a truck like that is not intelligent anyway.
The 3rd gen 4R has, arguably, a somewhat weak front suspension with the now-normal power rack and pinion steering. Weaker than the previous generation Toyota torsion-bar IFS, even though the 3rd gen has [slightly] more articulation. (Solid axles still rule. Irrelevant here, I know, since none of the vehicles under consideration have solid axle fronts.)
However, the 3rd gen 4Runner is one of the most trouble-free vehicles---not truck or 4WD, but vehicle of any kind---ever made.
I looked for R50 Pathfinders, but there were never enough on the market in my area, and they appeared to be even smaller inside than the 4Runner.
I envy the visibility and space inside the Mitsu, but I've heard that parts are getting to be more and more of a recycle yard affair.
