Every year, I wait and monitor the weather forecast to plan my first escape down to the deserts of southern Utah. This time usually comes towards the end of September or early October. It's all about the temperatures...When will it cool? My family and I were surprised when we saw the temperatures for this past Labor Day were in the low 70s. It was time.
My friend, Craig, has a brother who has a home in Escalante and invited us down. This small town sits in south-central Utah and is still for the most part, small. Yes, it has its tourist season but usually people are just traveling through on their way along beautiful Highway 12. No, this is not the next Moab, at least not now, but it is the gateway to the Grand Staircase Monument with 1.9 million acres to explore.
The weather was stunning. But, storm clouds were in the air!

We were hiking and noticed that rain was in the distance. An hour later, the canyon was flowing. It was awesome to see the canyon flash. A desert secret that was shown to us for a precious time.

We took off our shoes and cautiously proceeded. Awesome!

I have learned that when rain is in the forecast, don't be afraid to head to the desert. It's just crazy dramatic!

As the skies cleared, we entered some slots. So fun...So dramatic.

Lilly climbing and exploring...fun!

The girls grabbed a snack and enjoyed the beauty of canyon country.

We made our way back to the trailhead just in time for the sprinkles to fall from the sky once again. Time to explore some other place.

More to come...
