Help me choice a generator/fuel

I'm researching generators for a ford 4x4 diesel camper I'm building. II'm mostly building it for a trip to central America. I live almost full-time in a diesel pusher motorhome that has a onan propane generator.. What what a pain in the but it is .. The other day I spent 4 hours just trying to find a place that would fill my propane tanks. That being said propane is out. I researched some diesel generators but most are super expensive or crazy loud.
I'm leaning towards an inverter type honda or yamaha .. maybe someone that has travelled south can give me some suggestions

Ive got a Yamaha 2000 because I gotta a better deal then the Honda. Cant go wrong with a Honda or Yamaha. There is many quiet china gennys around that have gotta great reviews if you wanted to save money. I felt better buying a solid name once and forgetting about it

What are you looking to power with the generator?

It really depends on how often you think you will use your generator. If it's in frequent as a back up then yeah go with Gasoline Inverter, we have two (redundancy) honda's with us.

But if you are going to be using your generator several times a week to power high load devices, then suck it up and get a diesel generator and be a one fuel truck. In hindsight I wish we had gone with the little Onan 3600 Watt diesel genny. It's rainy season now and solar sucks, so if we want to just boondock for a week or so, the generators have to come out, and that's with 1000 watts of solar on the roof.

We carry a Jerry can of Gasoline but it's annoying after a while, and also it would be nice to automate the generator based on battery level, which we have the capability to do now, but obviously the little Hondas aren't compatible with.

So my reco is that if yu have large appliances (A/C, fridge and a freezer (even on DC these are big consumers), induction cooktop, water heater, etc) then a built in diesel genny is an amazing thing to have, and whenever we do the next refit I will put one in. But if you have a basic camper (2-4 outlets, no large AC loads), and plan inconsistent use, then a small Honda is awesome.

I mostly use the generator to power the air conditioner. I travel with 2 bulldogs and they pretty much need a.c.. I really would like to use a diesel generator. I've heard some mixed reviews on the onan silent diesels . I'm leaning towards and older onan diesel. The only draw back is the noise

There are a lot more options than onan... maybe look for a small used marine generator. Some of those are pretty low output and made to run 24/7.

I saw this one mep-831a 3kw military.. Might work

Yeah I don't have personal experience with those but they seem pretty well regarded - make sure you don't end up with a 3 phase though. 72 dB isn't quiet, but it's not super loud either.

Nothing wrong with 3 phase. Most 3 ph. generators in this size desired will be 120/208/240 volt, or just 120/208 volt.

Just be cautious of accidentally buying surplus any generator whats output 400 Hz. (military uses alot of 400Hz power)
That will seriously limit its usefulness.
But with that,
Sometimes those can be a bargain if you want 400 Hz, Or just want to canabalise its motor or something.

We had a bunch of 60Hz generators and then an inverter that converted to 400Hz for the aviation electronics stuff.

The military generators can be large, heavy and noisy.

The Cummings Onan that I have has a Kubota diesel in it but they are not cheap. This is going to replace a military MEP 903 that is currently mounted on the truck

If you need a 6 kw generator than light towers are a good source, I have a tower that I would sell the whole thing for $1,000

Be carful of using to large of a diesel generator because they can wet stack

You can check out these, I was looking at these for the small truck

If you're considering using the Honda EU2000i or the EU3000i or even the Yamaha, you might want to consider this Tri-Fuel Kit.

MOTOR SNORKEL TRI-FUEL (Natural Gas, Propane, and Gasoline) Conversion Kit

http://www.motorsnorkel.com/motor-s...propane-and-gasoline-conversion-kit-3409.html

This kit will allow your generator to run on natural gas, propane or gasoline. The really nice thing is, you can switch from gas, i.e. propane, to gasoline by just turning one off and the other one on, even while the unit is running.

I bought a kit but have not installed it yet. I have a EU2000i and EU3000i both, and have not decided which one I'm going to use yet.

We have 3 generators at our house. Started off with a Generac 5500XL. Bought that in like 1992/3 or so. Power used to go out all the time at our house. It is loud & heavy. Used it camping once, in the middle of nowhere at an atv campgrounds. They came & told us to shut it off, too loud. So, then we started looking at the quiet Honda EU2000i. Great reviews & the quietest on the market then. A few years later, we bought 2 of them. I saved $200 each, got 2 free covers, a parallel power kit @ 1/2 price (of $199) & 2 free 8 amp 12v charging cords. I just lucked out that i had the cash when the sale was on. We love them. They start always, but so does my Generac. We still have them all. All run great. The 2 honda's & the parallel power kit runs our Camper A/C no problem. I do turn the A/C off when using the toaster or microwave though.

Advise: what ever you do buy, make SURE you can get parts. Buy some extra carburetor's if you plan to keep them a good long time.

20 years after buying my Generac 5500XL, the ethanol destroyed the carburetor (even with Sta-Bil every year). Literally pitted the metal so bad, it would not work. So I called the toll free 1-800 #. What i got was "I'm sorry sir, we no longer make parts for that model." I asked if a $1200 Generator is now considered throw away ? "Well sir, it IS 20+ yrs old, I think you have gotten your moneys worth !" I said yeah, but it has only been running for maybe 3-4 weeks total over it's life. So, I ended up finding a store that had some in stock. I ordered 3 of them. So, now i have a new one on it & 2 brand new spares. I will be looking for some carbs for my Honda's soon, before they are no longer avail. .

Also, these are avail for longer run times: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/to...enerator-accessories+generator-fuel-extenders

Generac has just come out with a 2000 watt small, quiet Generator that beat out the Honda EU2000i.

In an emergency, when no one else has power, but you do, you will find "friends" you never knew you had. I ALWAYS lock mine up, when using them or not, always locked. You will find yourself giving lessons on generators, to neighbors who think you can just plug anything into a generator. And why my small generators can't power my house & 2-4 neighbors houses too. I have had to explain to mine that my generators are only big enough to power our stuff, when they come knocking with an extension cord in their hand. I have told them, if you need to get warm, your welcome to come in & get warm, but thats it. I even had one ask me what I would do if someone tried to steal my generator. The smile on his face changed when i pointed to my 12 gauge & looked him straight in the eyes & said "I would shoot you dead." Sometimes, in an emergency, it is best to wait as long as you can before you run one. When you do run it, keep it locked. I had to run the Honda numerous times. I would start it up, run the fridge till it shut off, then run the freezer till it shut off, then the furnace till it shut off. Then bring it in the house till i needed to run it again, then take it back outside & lock it up. Even in the Buffalo winters, once every 3-4 hrs is sufficient to keep things from spoiling & from getting too cold in the house. If you have a freezer full of food & the power goes out, the generator will pay for itself the first time you use it.

Thanks for the replys.. I live in a diesel pusher motorhome so I pretty much always have power unless something goes wrong!!
I been looking at light towers and found an older one with a kubota d905 3 cylinder 3kw generator. The generator is the perfect size but not sure I can fit that engine in the back of my rig. Going to go look at it . The plan would be to mount the engine in an enclosure and the radiator mounted outside.
