Tuners...

Has anybody used Tuners on their vans ? I've talked to a few people and they have said a tune on the 5.3 motor would be so beneficial. Has anybody had any experience with tuning their van ?

I have 5star tune on my 5.4. Well worth the money IMO. It really wakes the motor up and helps with gas mileage.

I didn't see one specifically for the van Chevy/Gmc . I'm only seeing for Ford Vans and Chevy Trucks

I am using a Bullydog Guage Tuner on my 2010 AWD Express 5.3l. I mainly chose it for the gauges (primarly trans temp, but the others are nice) and the ability to correct the speedometer with bigger tires. I didn't notice a huge performance gain, but I also added several hundred pounds of camper build at the same time. So no good comparison. I also don't run the max HP tune because it requires 91 octane. The guage is a little small but otherwise I am pleased with it.

I have a SCT Livewire TS+ with custom tunes from 5Star for my 5.4 and it makes a great improvement. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade. They give great advice when you let them know what. Like Chris said "Give them a call".

For you guys with the 5.4l, what exactly did it do? Does it change the shift points so it makes more sense or does it just make it a little peppier?

I have a 5 star on the 6.8. Changed shift firmness and points quite a bit and did really ''wake'' it up. I haven't checked the numbers but I am guessing I have seen a small increase in mpg. Maybe a couple 10ths. I mostly got it for tire size correction, code reading, and trans temp. We will see how much more I like it when my ujoint conversion is done. Good product but fairly expensive too.

Have run DP tune in my 7.3 F350 for the last 10 years. Absolutely YUGE improvement in throttle response, engine smoothness, transmission functionality. And somewhere on the order of 40% more torque. Almost like driving a totally different vehicle. And for a 7.3L...it's dirt cheap. You ship Jody the computer and he re-flashes it for like $150. My engine mods are minimal: installed a Walker BTM straight thru muffler, and a Tymar-type air filter I got from Napa. I think I have the 80hp Mountain Towing tune.

For the 6.0L, tuning must be done via a handheld programmer, and that costs $450. Still well worth the cost.

Keep in mind the tuners for gas motors don't have near the effect that they will for a diesel. On a diesel you can keep adding fuel (and air) till the motor explodes. On a gasser there is only so much more fuel to be added and you run out of air. Timing can only be advanced so much and you're done. Gas tuners tweak those parameters a bit, but the bulk of the performance gains come from what they do to the transmission.

I'm having some trouble getting the tunes to take on my 2010 6.0. Jody has tried a couple of things and yesterday kicked it upstairs to SCT tech support. They downloaded some stuff from my X4 and I'm waiting to hear back from them.
