2020 F150 "BAWG Build"

Hello Everyone,

So its taken about 6 years but I am back in the truck game! I had an F250 that I loved that I bought new in 2011 with the 6.7l diesel, eventually deleted all the emissions (I was in TX), replaced the stock gas tank with a 50 gallon one (hello 800 miles!), put a craigslist canopy on the back and eventually moved up to Oregon in 2014. Once in Oregon my wife and I decided to start a family and being in a wheelchair and trying to get in and out of the truck with car seats and all the junk that kids need proved challenging. So in 2015 I traded it in and got a base model E350 at a local ford dealer and my wife told me I had made a huge mistake as we drove away. That was nice.

Once I had the van I was missing the 4wd that I rarely used, as well as the "cool factor" so I began looking into conversions. That led me to multiple converted 4wd vans and eventually with our second kid I dropped the E-series platform and got a Transit. That was when I was bitten by the "Eco-Boost" bug and IFS that made me feel like I was back in my old diesel but with a more comfortable ride. And while I had gotten accustomed to the maintenance that comes with the F250 axles (basically learned how to rebuild them) I still didn't like how rough the ride was compared to the IFS.

Well its 2020 and in the spirit of adding to the craziness my wife and I have decided to move to Idaho. I then realized maybe my 2wd Transit with a limited slip rear and decent all terrains wasn't going to cut it. So against my lenders wishes I decided to sell my van and get a new truck!

2020 F150 XL 3.5l Ecoboost, 6.5 bed, 10 speed, 3.55 / E-Locker, Tow package with the 36 gallon gas tank, Vinyl from top to bottom, front bench seat, fog lights, backup camera.

Its exactly what I would have ordered if I had the chance to build and order one and it was on the lot not far from me. Sticker price was 49k and I was out the door at 41k so I said sorry to everyone that worries about my finances and went and got it. Dont get me wrong, I am not going into extreme debt or anything but apparently its not good to buy new vehicles when your 15 days from closing on a new house. Personally I see my safety and well being of my children as a high priority so when the lender didn't say I couldn't do it, I saw that as a yellow light.

Nice find. The EB engines are quite nice and super fun to drive. I had a leased 2.7 2WD STX and drove it like it was a race truck. I now have the 5.0 and 4x4. Welcome to the F-150 overlanding crowd we're growing!

Thanks! I almost went for a 2019 F150 with a 5.0 at the carmax down the road but they wanted almost as much as this new one!

I really want to get another canopy (no way I am paying new prices when they can be had all day on craigslist for $500) but I also like the idea of a roof top tent on a rack over the bed. Either way I have blinds and a fridge and boring stuff to buy first.

More additions...

Deezee Tailgate assist (I hate the sound of dropped tailgates) -

Some Traction "mats" off Amazon (I have no idea how well they work but the price was decent enough to give them a try) -

I am sure most of you are like, ya cool buddy, get to the good stuff... Thats part of the reason I started this thread, I have seen questions before about buying a base model and building it up to what you want it to be and since that's my plan (just gonna take a little minute, not a weekend) I figured I would do a build thread as an example.

But for now I am doing basics, which is still hard to decipher whats legit and what isnt, and amazon doesnt help with all its random brands. I was a boy scout so I intend to carry more than I probably need, but the longer I live the more I learn that if you have what you need, you probably won't have to use it.

Raptor Apologist.
Btw I'd throw some anti abrasion tape (amazon RacersTape) and on the body side of your tailgate because the DZ will push that wire rope that holds the tailgate onto the paint.... Ask me how I know.

they did have some of that clear tape in the kit that I put on the body side at the bottom and then also on the upper tailgate side. Maybe I’ll do more...

If that DZ unit craps out, get the Ford OEM unit. It’s hidden and works well.

You’ve got recovery tracks, toilet, baby wipes. You’re ready. Throw some food and a tent in the bed and get out there. I’ve got the same Britax seat. Great product.
Thanks, I’ll look into the OEM one. I didn’t even think about looking for a ford one, figured if they had one it would be on the truck lol.

Yep I’m ready to get some sort of bed tent/cover thing in the back for the four of us and start enjoying the outdoors again.

The ‘15-‘20 F-150 only had a damped tailgate as an option on lower trims (becomes standard around Larait/King Ranch). To get it from the factory you must order the bed step. To put in in, I believe you only need to remove the tailgate and a taillight (for access to the backside of something). There are videos on YouTube.

Gotcha. I found a video by cjoff-road installing the ford one and man that’s slick. I’m not too worried either way but it’s nice to have options!
