So does it track/backtrack?

Yes, the screen leaves a bread crumb line on the map and it has a function called "track back" that will route back along a track (haven't tested yet)

You can also download the stored tracks back to map source.

sort of on/off topic... Can you add topo to any of the other Nuvi's? I can't seem to find a real answer. I have a 60csx that I love, but it's not really set up for ease of use in term of finding things quickly. I'd like something along the Nuvi line.

Ok Ok, I know just suck up and buy the 500.

Edit: Just found the other Nuvi thread. Has anyone actually uploaded Topo to a Nuvi 200w or 205w?

Wow. Awesome unit and price at that.
Now I kinda regret buying a 276c - Im not really hardcore yet (I usually travel with others) in getting out in the sticks and this (nuvi) wouldve been a good choice for me since its newer tech, preloaded maps, and has the micro SD card slot.

I previously had a nuvi 680 a regular street orientated unit. I could 'view' topo maps by loading them into the SD slot but it wouldn't route. There was no real functionality with them and you had to swith between city and topo (losing the functionality of the one not selected). On my other nuvi, there was no routing or tracking with the topo. The integration of the nuvi 500 seems much better.

For a slightly higher price-point, the forthcoming Garmin GPSMAP 620/640 might be a good alternative. Its features are comparable to the popular 276C, but in a more modern, touch-screen package. I'm excited for this series.

If you already have a 60csx save your money. Use the 60csx for hiking and get a Nuvi for your vehicle. I bought a Nuvi 660 and use it soley for my vehicle navigation now. It's awesome. I use the city navigator for pavement and most forest roads then switch it over to the Topo when I need it. The topo works great on the my Nuvi. The turn by turn does not work but who needs that when you are off road anyways. A Nuvi 660 can be had for a little over $200 now. I put in a 2GB card and have that loaded with the topo software, mp3's and photos. The 660 comes with a traffic reciever and it has blue tooth for your cell phone. It is really a great all around vehicle navigation unit. Just my opinion.

What preloaded topo map is on the Nuvi 500? Is it the 1:100k scale maps of all the 48 states? So if I want the 1:24k I just need to the maps correct? With the Nuvi 500 and additional maps is there any disadvantage to the 500 vs the 60cx? I plan to use this in my vehicle and mainly need it for off-road, don't really need a gps for on-road in my 80 but it'd be an extra perk if I did have it.

I would say the only advanctage of the 60 series is portability. If you do lots of hiking the 500 series is not good. for the rig a 500 will be easier to see and use.

Note, just like the 276C, Garmin has failed to see the full crossover potential with their 620 and 640 by not utilizing a high sensitivity receiver (ala sIRF, et al). Not a big problem, I guess, if you don't use it around tall skyscrapers in big cities, in deep canyons, or in heavily forested areas. Seems like another missed opportunity to me.

I got my 500 last night. So far I like it, coming from the 60CSx.

I did put the topo for all of MI in and I cant tell yet if theres a difference between it and the topo thats loaded in the 500.

I have been wanting a crossover for some time. I had looked at the Magellan Crossover but was turned away by the very poor reviews and software problems.

Now my problem is that I live in Canada and there is no Nuvi 500 for Canada anyone know of any other options?
