Garmin Nuvi 500 preloaded with Topo and City

Finally figured it out, using GSPBabel to convert the .kmz (Google Earth) file to a .gpx, then opening that in Garmin Roadtrip and building a route from the points (somewhat tedious), and finally exporting the route to the Nuvi 500. I managed to figure that all out on my own, but finally had to give up and call Garmin support (who were very helpful by the way) to figure out that once you have sent the route to the unit you need to go to Tools>My Data>Import Route From File to find the route you sent over USB, then open it and it will show up under "Custom Routes". Hope that makes sense and might help somebody else.

Here's where I found the .kmz for the Mojave Road:

Reliving an old Tread but why start a new one. Why would someone pick the 550 over the 500? Can anyone explaing the advantages. They are the same price according to the Garmin web site....

In not sure, but I saw the $500 is on sale at REI this weekend for $225. A very good price in my opinion. I still really like mine.

The only difference I was able to figure out is that the 550 comes with Canadian maps and the 500 comes with Topo

I'm assuming you can load the same 24K version of the Garmin Topo maps onto this like the Garmin 60 csx? I love the 60csx but the screen is kind of small for route finding.

I sure wish Garmin would come up with a valid replacement for the 60csx that would work for off-road travel, overlanding.
