LJ storage drawers

If you went with the lower drawer based upon your measurements then your net cubic volume would not be much different from the taller narrower version.

We would want to produce the 5 of the same size. Cost are incurred to create different machine set ups for different sizes. We can do one off stuff however the price can climb by up to 30%

My quest is not for maximum drawer volume. I want preserve maximum bulk storage in the cargo area, AND have a drawer for items that always stay with the rig. Most of my stuff that I need to carry on a weekend camping trip for 4 will not fit in a drawer, so I want to minimize the intrusiveness of the drawer cabinet. This is what I carry in the Jeep when camping (with a family):

Yes, I need a trailer, but that's not financially possible right now.

So...it sounds like people simply want a low weight alternative to the Tuffy product. That's fine with me. I don't want to dilute the efforts to raise buyers for the group buy. I withdraw my group buy participation. This should help remove the wildcard factor that my request was causing. I hope by withdrawing, that it becomes easier to find the minium 5 buyers (for the 12" drawer).

I appreciate your participation in this thread. It has been very helpful. You have now given me a price range of approximently $600 for a custom full width 4" high drawer unit for an LJ. That's all I was asking for last month when I initially contacted you. I now know that A) it's possible and you are willing to make one, and B), that it's ball park cost is about $600 ($465 + approx 30%). I anticipate placing my order for my custom unit after the New Year, hoping I receive some holiday spending money :)

I have my storage "set in stone" so to speak, and don't need a drawer. I have however spent many hours in the back of my LJ and can offer some observations. I like the set up you propose, the 2" gap on the side is a great idea. I use this on my LJ to store my long aluminum tent poles and walking sticks.
I can also say that it is great to be able to open the rear tailgate and the drawer quickly while leaving the cold dirty zippers alone, so don't make it to tall to clear bottom of the soft top window.
I have rebuilt my whole storage area just to raise it up from 6" to 8". I used my Jeep for a couple of camping seasons and could not believe the amount of things and objects we commonly use that have one side 8" in height and not 6"...I really am not kidding it's amazing..................

Thanks for all the effort Martyn, Good luck.............

I would post this up on Rubicon Owners Forum as well. That is where the Genright Safari Gas Tank idea got a foothold. I figure if their are 10 people that were willing to shell out $1000 for a gastank you are at least going to find 5 people combined to get these drawers going.

I am very torn between the two drawer heights. Both have their merits. The lower height would make it more convenient to mount a fridge on sliders but, the 12" would allow you to push the fridge up against the roll bar.

I'll decline also. After some thought I'm going to go with a modular setup of my own making that will work with the rear seat installed or be expandable with the rear seat removed and double as a sleepy platform.

Okay, I posted this info in the following three forums:
- http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/showthread.php?p=117423#post117423
- http://www.rubiconownersforum.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=61955

Hopefully this will lead to some additional orders!

thanks for the crossposting nwoods. I had posted this on JF already. looks like they deleted your post there. its ok seems everyone there wants me to build a hide a trunk or put a heavy job box or lightweight lightduty plastic tub in the back. Martyn will get a chuckle out of that thread since he's supposedly laughing all the way to the bank with a 300% profit margin on the drawers. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6161377

I also have this posted on JU, also met with a similar response

That is not a surprising response from JF and JU. The focus on these forums is decidedly not overlanding. The bigger the rocks the better. They will spend unlimited amounts of money to run 35" & 37" tires but a foam beer cooler is plenty good for storage.

But there might be a positive response from the Rubicon Owners forum. It is the only forum other than Expo that I still follow.

you'd think they would want to keep their COG low and overall weights down to minimize any breakage not to mention keeping the rear end from sagging and bottoming out easier. all qualities I would think a rockcrawler would want. I guess as long as they can look cool up on them 35s and 37s they're happy.

Wow, they didn't even notify me! I did a quick search before I posted, but didn't find your thread, so that's why I created mine.

Here is the funny thing about all those guys on the other forums. They love to talk a great game about how they can build it. But, oddly they never do. Or if they do it is a hack and slash piece of junk yard art that I would not trust to put rubbish in let alone trust it is worthy of expedition travel.

A piece of plywood with carpet or a sheet of metal with dupicolor bedliner does not equate to a drawer system.

After further consideration, I have to side with Nwoods on the lower drawer height. I think the AT standard low drawer of 8.75" would be perfect. Beowulf is also on board with this height so that makes three of the needed five for the price break. With any luck two more interested parties will step forward.
