I'm interested in building a trailer

I've been working on a OH trailer design for my TJ, and I would like to share them on this forum to get some input and ideas. I want something that will match my jeep somewhat, and I want it to be a fleet side for more interior space. I am also going to use an independant trailing arm suspention, and incorporate a lid to keep the dirt out. The dimensions that I am considering are 58" wide by 60" long & 22" high on the tub, then add 6" for the top bringing the total height to 28".

Let me know what you think.

Happy Trails!

Bruce

Shock absorbers?

Hello Martyn,

This is something that Adventure Trailers was using on their trailers. I thought it looked like a good idea, so I did some research and found a source for them (Address provided). I'm still in the design phase, but soon, I'll be purchasing material, I hope. I need to sell my Gladiator before I can realy dive into building the trailer.

Happy Trails!

Hey Bruce,

Glad you made it over to Expo. Looking forward to see the progress of the trailer.

Howdy Patrick,

This forum looks like it has alot of good information, I was on most of the day today lookin at stuff. I would like to think I would make half way decent progress on the trailer, however, that remains to be seen.

Happy Trails!

Have you seen the trailer made with a jeep tub? Let me see if I can find the pics

I saw an outfit that did a trailer that looked like it used the tub off a wrangler, only with the front boxed in. The one I saw had 6 people in it floating in a lake or something. That's where I got the idea to do a fleetside trailer. I talked with an outfit in Orange called Reliable Sheet metal, they will help me with the tub for about $2,300.00, all I have to do is show up with the frame. I hope to build this trailer for under $5,000.00. We'll see. Let me know if you find that site, I would be curious to see if it was the same one, or a different one.

Happy Trails!

In addition to the air bags you will need shock absorbers.

The air bags are providing ride height, but no dampening.

Check out our homebuilders section for any parts you need http://www.adventuretrailers.com/homebuilder.html

The upper bracket sold for vehicles won't last off-road, we had these ones made to our specs.

trailer for a jeep

I am working on a trailer for my 85 CJ7 it is made from 14gauge material, the bub body is as wide as the jeep tub and 7 ft long. the trailer is going to be a hard top tent trailer that sleeps 4. I purchased all my material at a shop, they did my cad drawings in their modeling program and then cut the pieces on a water torch and bent the pieces to fit. I saved all their drawings on a ptf. the cost so far with the axels and tires is $3,500.00 canadian.

The set up I was looking to use is a bellows style air shock, it's all one package. Do you feel that they should be separate, air bags and shocks? It would be a little cheaper to go that way, but I want to do this the right way.

That sounds great! I don't suppose they have a shop located anywhere in So Cal do they? The company I spoke with would be working off drawings that I provide, crude as they are. But they will use 14 ga sheet and bend it at the top to create bed rails for strength, and re-enforce the back corners to support a tail gate as well. Then I plan on using stock Wrangler fender flares to match my TJ.
