Singlespeed chainring and cog? (29er)

Hey, what are you guys using for chainrings and cogs? I'd like something like a standard 32x20 or 33x20. Any brands you guys recommend? My Monocog's driveline is toast.

I run Surly rings and cogs and a SRAM PC-1 chain. 34-18 on the 29er. These cost a few more bucks but are indestructible. http://www.surlybikes.com/parts.html

Don't forget I live in Florida. Although I did ride some trails in Palo Duro Canyon and in NM with that gearing. I also ride 51-16 on my fixed gear road bike and fixed gear time trial bike. Oh yeah, and I like pain!:victory:

I was just reading some reviews on the Surly chainring, and a few have commented that they've taco'ed theirs. Some say from hitting rocks/logs, but others say just climbing. Was it due to improper install? Is there a special way to mount these? What precautions should I take when installing? I do NOT want to be walking back to my house in the middle of a ride!

I don't have a 29'r but I am running 32-18 on my 26. The next SS that I am currently building I am going Surly for sure! looking at a 28-14 ratio!

I've never damaged one including during several 6 hour solo races. As far as getting stranded, the Surly is steel so it can be bent back in place whereas if you taco an aluminum ring you risk breaking it trying to bend it back in place.

I run a Blackspire 34 tooth front ring with a Race Face outer bash ring (mostly as a spacer). That goes to a 21 tooth Endless Bikes rear cog. This is on a converted 26" frame. I just use regular 3/32" chains rather than SS specific ones. I just run plain old SRAM PC-850 chains on my bikes (yes I still run mostly 8 speed drivetrains).

I've been on the White Industry Eno cranks with their Ti bottom bracket for a couple months. That set up is the cat's meow. Those cranks are so bloody stiff, it's crazy. Plus, the rings are as round as round gets. Crazy to expect rings to be round, but so many cranks and rings these days are just not round at all.

LOL! I dig your dilemma. If I have $400 invested in the whole singlespeed I would be surprised. Lots of veloswap parts, like the sweet M732 XT 7-speed hubs (the ones with grease ports) and NOS Mavic 231 rims from which I built the wheels.

Yeah, I'm going to try and build up a cyclocross SS in the spring time. I'm hoping for a total budget of maybe $700. Time to hit craigslist!! :victory:

Got the Surly chainring and cog installed. Thanks for the help. I hope I installed the cog the right way. Didn't know which way faced out. 33x20 set up.

Looks good. No right or wrong way. The Surly rear cog is a little bit offset with a thick center section. Just put it on which ever way gives you better chain alignment.
