Colorado in the Colorado July 2009

The last trail we did was Georgia Pass
Rating = moderate
23 miles, 2.5 hours

We started on the southeast end just off of US 285 near Jefferson. The road in is wide and gravel. We stopped at a rustic forest service campground for a quick lunch before heading the rest of the way up. As the road continues it begins to narrow a bit but remains smooth gravel all the way to the top.

The north side decent was a bit more challenging but doable for most trucks. The tricky part was making sure that we were following the right road. This was the only road in which we encountered a little bit of mud. It was mostly dried up by this time except for a few small creek crossings. As we worked our way toward Breckinridge, we passed by the remains of an old dredging operation.

There must have been millions of tons of these rocks along the roadside.

One more night in Colorado and we were on our way home. The next day on the drive home we made one more stop to take some pictures at an old pony express stop.

Great Trip Northern Explorer! It looks like we had the same idea for a Summer Vacation and missed each other by only days. Great Looking Rig.... I would have noticed it out on the trail.

Hey Yo -

Good one NE. The truck and FWC look right at home bouncing around up there. Great photos and trail details. You picked the best time of year to see it all. 4300+ miles is quite the haul.... Nicely done!

Wow, great pictures! I am super jealous. I need to get back out to Colorado one of these summers for more alpine adventures. Good stuff! Sounds like the trip went smooth. Welcome back

NE, was just wondering where that pony express station was? It looks like the one that was on a ranch I lived on in Brady Nebraska. The ranch was the upper 96th ranch. The town of Gothenburg NE. bought it and moved it to there city park. I grew up around that building. Sure looks like the same one to me.

Awesome trip report! And thanks for adding the little summaries on the trails.
CO is on the calendar for 2010- we will definitely be using tips from your thorough write up.

I am jealous Jason! Those pics are the reason I love/hate ExPo! I have seen way too many CO pics on here lately and need to plan a trip out there.

Cool pics and great report. See you next week!
