Engine Swap...long post

I know how these threads usually go....everyone who has an opinion about what engine is best and will want to tell me to use XYZ engine. Believe me I've considered many (Stroker, GM 4.2 i6, GM 4.8 v8, GM 5.3 v8, ect, ect..) and am still on the fence. But this time, I'm JUST looking for tips, insight, experience, expertise on the following....

I guess this is my fault for not specifically stating that I don't want anyone to tell me to use XYZ engine.....

Sorry but I just fail to see the point of going through an entire drivetrain swap with questionable second hand parts from a wrecked vehicle to arrive with the exact same torque/hp that can be had from the engine and systems you have now. You asked for tips and I gave you one.

It is a valid point that with unit body type construction that you will want to apply any engine mass loads to the same locations as stock if at all possible. Moving those points away from the stock points may or may not be successful. I can't claim any experience with the XJ chassis so I've no idea how sensitive they are to such a rearrangement of where the loads are applied, but it is something to keep in mind. Typically unit bodies are designed to distribute point loads over a large area. Usually you can not simply weld on a tab or bracket without also including load spreading plates of sufficient size and stiffness (not necessarily as rigid as possible).

That said, if you're up to such a project then I say go for it.

Absolutely! That's where I have the most experience :ylsmoke: Hence all of the questions about integrating the electronics; not about fitment & structural integrity.

Dan at Burnsville Offroad got back to me, here's what he had to say....

So the questions, that I still have are:

1. Can you tell me if the PCM monitors the transfercase? The PCM just looks for the 4wd position switch signal

2. What fuel pressure does the Dakota pump push? 58psi

3. Is the Dakota a return-less fuel system? Yes

4. Is there any way to bypass the SKIM module? No

5a. Will exhaust manifolds off of a 2002 Grand Cherokee v8 fit on the 2008 Dakota v8? Yes

5b. Are the manifolds the same? No (the GC manifolds hug the block a little tighter and exit at a slightly different location).

6. Where can I find measurements for this engine? You'll have to measure yourself.

7. Where can I find a full factory service manual for this vehicle? Buy from a local Dealership

8. Does the Dodge incorporate anything like the Torque Management feature found in GM PCM's? No answer

Any other advice you would offer? His recommendation: Buy a complete wrecked vehicle so I can get everything I need.
