HID conversion for stock JK fogs?

Has anybody installed an HID kit in the stock fogs yet? The 3000K bulbs would certainly increase both visibility in inclimate weather and conspicuity from the front...
The stockers are 45 watt 9145; would this type of kit need a capacitor to keep from flickering?

I think Gear has done this. Might PM him. IIRC, he did the headlights and fog lights. Recall they were bright as we were leaving the Meet and Greet back in Aug.

I have seen it done. One of the guys on the JK Forum has done it and was showing it off at one of there meet and greets. I would suggest doing a search over there. Here is a website of a local company that is selling HID kits for crazy low prices. I would just call them and tell them what you plan on doing. I had an HID bulb go out on my headlights and I looked all over for a replacement for a 10 year old bulb. Most were asking $150 + for the bulb. DDM Tuning was not only local but they sold me two HID bulbs for $25.

Thanks, Gear.

...and I open the page, pow, an Elise.
One of my friends at work just bought one and was looking for a source for parts...

I started to place an order with them and noticed that the pay page wasn't an HTTPS site ---- I didn't feel right about entering personal info and gave them a call. They won't do phone orders.

Am I being paranoid about online security?

Nope :) If they don't 'get' https and don't do phone orders then they don't have a clue.

I'd find someone else at that point...

If I remember right from when I did mine I dont think the fog light circuit is controlled by pulse width modulation, so no cap needed. No relay needed either if you dont draw over 45 watts.

Hey Bill,

Long time no see been in the Caribbean for a few months but back now, actually one of the guys I work with did the HID conversion to the headlights and yes did need a capacitor, long story short he ended up removing them and returning to stock after loosing his headlights for the third time. Not sure what brand he was using though, from what he said they ran so hot it was literally melting connections to the installed capacitor.

Why convert the fogs to HID? Why not the headlights?
Because of what Kenny just relayed, the legal issue, and I think LEDs would be better suited for headlights...

Welcome home, Kenny. I thought you were posted in Jacksonville next? Did you sell your old house?

Maybe it's because I need new glasses but I don't see the post about the legal issue. What's the legal issue with HID conversion? Is it illegal to put a HID bulb into a lamp not approved for HID by the DOT, or something like that?

Yes.
HIDs for headlights also need to be self-leveling to be legal. So you'd need an entire assembly.
An HID bulb is a different size, color temperature, & lumen output than a halogen. Like trying to fire your photon torpedoes through your phaser bank...

Doesn't all of that apply to the fog lights too? Or are they Klingon disruptors?
