So, due to some interesting circumstances we've had to
lower the insurance coverage on my Jeep.

Liability only w/ uninsured driver add-on.

This means that all else, save my Jeep is covered
in an accident that is deemed my fault. Much better
situation overall for my family.

So...

definitely getting a full width winch bumper now!!!!!

oh, and I decided to deal with the growing kid issue later. I can't
get around the fact that I know 100% what is good-to-go and
what is ready to fall off my Heep.

That in itself makes keeping it the best option for us for the next
year or so. (we're trying to pay down some debt...)

Ive got just liability & unisured motorist on both of mine as well, they are just to cheap and easy to replace if in an accident to justify cost of full coverage. The only thing I am slightly concerned about is theft or something like that, but there are a few 'deterrents' built into my wheeler.

I've got liability and some sort of special thing in case I were to hit another deer or an elk or something. My deer I hit a while back I didn't bother to report because it was just a broken turn signal and headlight bezel, so replacing those myself would be cheaper in the long run in the slight case that my insurance would decide to use that incident to raise my premium.

I backed my cherokee into my sisters van once. Her back bumper was just barely hanging over the edge of the driveway, and I couldn't see her in my rear view mirror. I wasn't going very fast, and the only outer damage to the van was a scratch on the bumper, but when we opened the back hatch there was a weld on the unibody that was cracked. Her insurance decided the van was totalled because of that, and now whenever I see her she jokes about how nice the van I bought her is.

I agree that these Jeeps are too cheap to carry collison coverage, but....

You may want to add comprehensive to your insurance. It is relatively cheap and claims do not count against you as accidents. It covers theft, vandalism, etc. It may even cover deer collisions, but you may want to check on that.

My jeep recently had a window smashed at the parking lot where I take the bus to work.

-broken driver's window
- stolen Alpine stereo
- They cut some wiring under the dash
- damage to the dash
- partially cut off my catalytic converter

I recieved $1,400 from insurance, after my $250 deductible. $50 for a window and dash peices, and I used their insurance replacement services to source a new Alpine radio ($50 cheaper than anywhere I could find). I did all my own work. A few hundered more dollars and they would have totaled it, then of course I'd buy it back for next to nothing.

End result, I have about $1,200 in my pocket and Jeep is back on the road.

I also recommend most people get the road side assistance added to their polices. It is dirt cheap. Mine is $4 every 6 months. I've never neede a tow, but it has paid for a flat fix, keys locked in car, and several jump starts.

I worked for the largest auto insurer in the U.S. for 5 years, so I know my way around a policy. Even with these additional coverages, my semi-annual bill is only a touch over $200. It pays to have multi-line, multi-car, accident free, and other discounts.

Insurance questions......

I never expected ths subject to come on the Portal, and one that I am well versed in.

Since insurance is regulated by each State and there can be differences between states one should be cautious in taking advise from one state and assuming that it will apply to their situation in another state.

Generally speaking comprehensive coverage is very inexpensive and always includes damage cause by animals regardless of wither you hit them or they hit you, also all glass damage is covered under this coverage. Comp losses are usualy not assigned a point for insurance premium rating purposes however some companies may have a loss free discount that may be removed if a comp loss exceeds a certain dollar threshold.

As for the choice of carrying only liab and un-insured motorist coverage, making sure your liability limits are high enough to pay for whomever you happen to injure and whatever you happen to damage is a very important thing to keep in mind. Having to fix your own vehicle because you don't have collision coverage is a loss you can recover from, casuing injuries or damages beyond the limits you carry is a much bigger pill to swallow.

Thanks,
Fred

My XJ is worth $2K at best (without all my parts on it) so I have the minimum insurance plus uninsured motorist. I'd say it really depends on your vehicle worth and what you're doing with it.

ex: my motorcycle has full coverage because I use it very differently in canyons ;)

I agree with this statement.

I do, however, think the comment about checking to see what your liability amounts are, is very smart.

If its only 10,000 and I hit a rolls royce (for example..haha) I'd be SOL once I reached that $10k mark. One of my teachers in high school told us that he carried $1m in liability insurance and that was it. He drove volvo's and M.benz's primarily (read:tanks)...lol...

So I think I'm going to get a Logans steel bumper. What do you guys think? I've heard nothing but good about it, and the price is right at around $300.00

The thugs partially cut off your catalytic converter, huh? ;) I think the kids that spray painted my hood a few years ago cracked my windshield too.....

(that vandalism didn't get reported, purple jeep...purple spray paint...oh well, its only one stripe.)

Brian,

I have always had full coverage on all of my vehicles. I have used State Farm since I was a kid and they have been very good to me all of these years.

I get extra discounts on my vehicles, because I also use State Farm for my homeowners insurance.

My vintage vehicles get deep discounts, under $200 per year each, for full coverage including proper replacement value.

My 4Runner is listed as my main vehicle (because my son broke the tranny on the Buick, UG!), but it's listed as up to 7,500 miles per year. It only cost's me $450 per year for full coverage on the SWR. No tickets. no accidents, safe driver discounts, etc. All of the savings really add up with State Farm! Check them out, a quote is free. Just walk in to your local SF office and see what he can do for you.

I would never be without full coverage. You never know what might happen out there.

Hi Mark, I'm hearin' ya loud and clear, man.

The coverage we have is fairly complete(comp, collision, uninsured, gap, etc) on our minivan, since its still being financed, but do to some "events", liability and uninsured is now
maxing out our budget for insurance on the jeep.

I'll be honest when I say we've been with this company (California Casualty) for a long time and they have done their part 100% in every respect(my wifes BMW totalled, my Jeep stolen, two "not our fault" parking lot hits, etc), but you guys are paying far less than we did before our rates went up.

used to pay 1200 per year for two cars, now pay 2200ish...ouch. Might be worth it now to look around, but I'm kinda draggin' my feet since we've had such good service and response for the last 10 years from CalCas...

V\To answer your one question, I would buy a Logan's bumper myself and was really looking at them. I ended up getting a deal on a Loose Nut's bumper that I couldn't pass up so I went that route. About the only thing I didn't care for of the Logan's bumper was I though it stuck the winch out a little futher then other brands. Pricewise, it's hard to beat and very good reviews.

As for insurance, being that you had your last Jeep stolen, it does surprise me to see the coverage dropped down. I can relate to costs being high as I had been a very long term Farmers customer for years (since my mom worked for them and took care of all the paperwork). About 8 years ago I was tired of paying ~$2400 a year on two cars. I ended up going with Liberty Mutual and was able to double my coverage limits and cut my cost to $1500 per year. Currently I have 5 vehicles and the Kamparoo and it's costing me $2400/year. I also changed my home policy over and tripled my coverage for the same cost.

I played the "loyalty" game with my insurance but in the end all I did was to pay more for less. I seriously would say to start shopping around. It's not like they are your personal, lifelong friend, they are a company and don't have feelings for you, just your money. BTW, having a home owners plan (even renters insurance) can typically lower your car insurance.

Good luck bud.
