Valley of the Gods-Comb Wash-Monument Valley December 2009

By the end of day two, we were all tired and knew we had to prepare better for the cold night. We brought the water inside the tent to avoid it freezing again, and made sure we had plenty of propane for the Mr. Buddy heater, and prepared things for dinner. It is interesting how when one is winter camping, the second night seems so much easier...less worries about staying warm, simply more comfortable overall. My body seems to adjust after the first night as well.

We had a great dinner of bratwurst, Fat Tire, along with some Sessions Lager and a bit of a growler from Moab Brewery.

Before too long, we had full guts, and some positive vibes. It was a beautiful clear night.

I just looked at the newspaper which displayed a graphic of the state that showed the 4 corners region at ~121% of normal snowpack where northern Utah was at ~75% or so...

"Adventure is for the adventurous.
My face is set.
I go to make my destiny.
May many another youth be by me inspired to leave the snug safety of his rut,
and follow fortune to other lands."

-Everett Ruess

The next morning we awoke slowly, though looking to get on the road we quickly broke camp after some coffee and whatever we could scramble up.

We decided to follow the Comb Wash road up towards Natural Bridges NM, therefore making a large loop before heading home.

The Comb Ridge and Comb Wash area recently was in the news as the supposed remains of desert wanderer Everett Ruess had been 'found' there. As it turns out, the remains were identified as Native American, and therefore -not- Everett's remains.

Good information, thanks.

Did you do any hiking in Valley of the Gods? The nights I have been there I have seen people very purposefully hiking off into the canyons. I assume there are ruins? I do not want directions, just curious about what's out there.

Had the snow on Comb Wash road been plowed, kind of looks like it?

I have been thinking about Comb Ridge a lot lately. Not sure why, it is just living large in my memory. Last time I was there the road was incredibly dusty. We stopped and ate a simple lunch of sandwiches next to a spring we found. The air was cool, but the sun was warm.

I can't confirm there are ruins, but based on the proximity to so many -other- ruins in the area, I would suspect so...

It had been plowed, however some places the snow was quite deep...

I actually had virtually the same Coleman heater, I just felt like it didn't put out enough heat. I wanted something I could potentially heat a room in my house in the event of a power failure or other emergency situation...the Coleman wouldn't have done the job too well.

Spectacular!!!!!!!!!! Now im second guessing me going to the coast!

I am sure it was much warmer along the coast...next time eh?:victory:
