I am currently debating/researching purchasing a 99 xcab/longbed for use as an expo rig. I am debating 2 setups. 1) Topper with built ins 2)Going flatbed with a ute style tray and camper. Let me know your opinions. I have searched various sites but these don't seem to be a popular plaform and I am curious as to why there aren't more out there. I have never been a truck guy nor a domestic guy, but I found a deal and like the 8 foot bed. Any reasons to not use this setup? And if you're using one show some pics.

'99's had rear drums which pose a real scary situation in panic stop scenerios. I had a '98 with the same setup. Ford tried a F-250 master cylinder as a band aid,but it wasn't until I believe 2001 that rear discs came out and that solved the problem. My auto had a weird glitch also in that when I came to a complete stop at an intersection and accelerated immediately, the tranny hadn't downshifted to first yet. The elevated rpm's resulted in a clunk as it forced a downshift. Sucked. My neighbor had the same year, same problems. Ford said"No problem found,no TC's present". Hold out for the discs and 5.4 engine.

my dad has a '99 with four wheel disc brakes, but his is a 4.2 v6 and is 2wd, so idont kno much about that year's v8 and 4x4, the only problem my dad has had with his is the manifold bolts rotted off creating a major exhaust leak, but had new ones put on and not a problem since

i dont know if i'd go long bed just because of the overall length, unless your not planning on trail riding then you'll be fine

I have a '99 f150 extra cab 5.4 and it has 4 wheel discs. For the tranny you can get a plug in module that hardens up the shifts and solves some of those problems. Its next on my list. ANY ford truck you get changes the spark plugs and take care doing it. Mine ran amazingly better after new plugs and cleaning the MAF sensor.

OH also if you get one with a slider back window check it for leaks with a hose before leaving the lot. They have thin plastic frame that cracks and leaks evereywhere. My new window was $450!!!

i have a 1997 f1504x4 v6(4.2)it currently has 340,000 miles on it. It has lived it's whole life on 33" mud tires. at one time I used to haul an old 70's stile camper in the back. I have not had any problems with my truck. I plan on rebuilding the motor this summer because she is starting to blow smoke. I overall vote positively for the Ford F150!
