Does anyone have a Safety Devices rack and a Camping Labs rooftop tent? I'm curious as how they mount to the rack, if they'll even fit, and what needs to be done to make it work. Pictures would be awesome too. :sombrero:

Not Camping Lab but I think their's is Mombasa. That's what's on my DII SD rack.

The tent sits on top of the top rail, about 8+ inches above the roofline.

Thanks, from what I hear, or think I've heard.. the Mombasa is basically the same thing as the Camping Lab RTT. I was measuring today and having it set on top of the side bars was exactly what I though was going to happen.

Did you have to do anything special or 'tweak' anything to make yours fit properly, or better?

Nope, it mounts right up to the top bars.

Awesome. Thanks for the help, just trying to make sure everything will work before I take a trip all the way there to pick mine up, and couldn't find any previous info on them with on a SD rack. lol :sombrero:

David from the chicago land rover club did a great job modifing a SD rack for a camping labs RTT. He trimmed off the rear basket and brought the front of the basket down to retain a front basket. The tent looks good IMHO on the rack that way and the rack retains the smooth sides needed in our area to drag it along trees on tight off camber trails.

allthough the weight is not over the top heavy getting as low as possible is a great idea.

I thought I had read somewhere you had trimmed your rack too. Haven I seen a pic on Dweb of a RTT on your rig?

Although I agree fully that trimming the SD rack to make the RTT sit flush and lower to the roof is better in pretty much every way I can think of, lower center of gravity, smoother finish, and maybe even looks better. I still won't be cutting my rack up. Which is what I was thinking was going to be required before I learned the tent can just sit on top of the side railing.

However I would still love to see some pictures of the setup with the rack trimmed. :sombrero:

Yeah I trimmed mine and have my tent flush with the floor it works real well that way. Mine is not a camping lab tent though so I will spare you guys pics of my poser mobile.

Streetwolf...dont be a wuss trim the rack. if thats what you want to use it for cut away and use the rack as you see fit. I find it funny that people treat the SD racks like the holy grail of racks. for god's sake cut the rack and mount the thing like its meant to be.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to trim my rack. Did you take just the rear off or did you trim the sides too? I'd like to see a pic of your rack.

I'm thinking about getting a RTT, and just trying to figure out best way to mount it.

I trimmed one side off as mine opens to the side. My tent is much bigger then most so it fills the basket.

If I was doing it for just me I would have used a small one and had it open forward over the hood or rearward and just cut the rear rail.

I like the tent for family camping and it has worked well. we camp in bear country alot so my wife and daughter like being off the ground and if a RTT is what it takes to get them out camping that is just fine by me.

I can pull the tent and SD rack in about 15 min so it has worked very well to have it just mounted on the rack all the time.

Here is a picture of my friends D2 & SD rack, he had it modded for his Hanibal RTT to fit. Hope it helps.

I originally had the same conundrum. Eventually I realized that a trimmed SD rack lost most of it's value. So I sold the SD rack for a decent price and bought a BajaRack, you'll easily have money to spare afterwards.

Yeah, there is no way in hell my SD is getting trimmed. I'm perfectly fine with it setting up like in the first pictures. I just wasn't sure if it was even possible, and wanted to double check before I took a trip to go get a RTT. Besides, with the RTT sitting high like that it doesn't interfere with the Hi-Lift, and shovel/axe, mounting.
