Lighting and Accesory Options for Hannibal Rack

I've got a Hannibal Roof Rack and Technitop tent, shovel bracket, 2 dual jerry can holders. I have previously run my roof tent so the ladder was to the rear, but that interfered with trailering, and I would have to remove the trailer when traveling and stopping for the night only. Plus, I had to leave the rear railing off on the back or try to disassemble it in the dark which is a drag. I had it off to the side the last couple of years, but that meant I had the same issues with the side rail.

I also have a Hi-Lift and a Pull-Pal I'd like to get up there, and have an awning and the shower stall/ice fishing shack for the roof tent. If I mount the tent so the ladder comes down onto the RTE bumper, Using the shack won't be possible and the awning use will be limited. Plus, I could see myself or my hood getting hurt climbing into the tent after a long night of drinking in camp. :sombrero:

PLUS!!! I want to install 4 lights in the front, one on each side, and two in the rear.

So....

Can anyone give some ideas as to how THEY set up THEIR Hannibal racks so I can decide how best to get all this stuff up there and in the case, which lights to use, particularly on the front?

I'm thinking I'll have to modify one of the side rails somehow to run the tent of the side and keep at least some rail for mounting stuff and provide a more secure loading area. I'm also interested to see how people ran their lights and wiring.

I have my rack off in my heated garage and my plan is to assemble everything in there now and in the spring, take off the heavy stuff, install it and finish up the wiring.

i used 4 hella FF300s and a hella matador work light in the rear. on my hannibal.

the hellas were mounded upside down, just look at the pictures in my build thread and you can see.

I don't have a Hannibal rack, but I used Hella FF500's on my roof. They are the same size as the old 500's, but have a more modern reflector and lens pattern that actually matches the factory lights well (on my 04). Some people like Hella 4000's or another serious light, but for where I'm driving, I don't need to project light 2 miles in the distance, I need more light within 1-200 feet. So the beam pattern of the 500's is better for that, they're cheaper, and smaller so they don't stick up so much. I ran the wiring behind the exterior A-pillar trim.

Princess Auto has some Hella Matador knock-off lights I'm using on my trailer. They're cheap, and the light itself works ok, but the switches aren't great and I've had to exchange a few.

FF500s might be a tight fit if he goes the upside down route. it'd be silly to mount them facing up as it kills the open face design of the front of the rack. also he has an RTT so i dont even think its an option.

Yeah I've got three lightforce XGTs on the bumper so I'm more concerned about flooding the area around my truck. I'd also like to add under-body LEDs and the LEDs in the roof tent idea is cool too. I could probably run the wiring up through the floor of my technitop or through one of the openings from the rear cap that holds the poles.

I'd like to mount the front ones under the rack between the windshield and the rack if possible. The rear and side I'm not sure about, but will have a shovel and high lift on two sides and the tent will open on the passenger side.

If you're looking to light close in, how about some Hella 6213's? They might fit under the rack too, and not look too bad. PA also has knock-offs of these. I have bought them but not really tested them yet.

I take it your model of Hannibal doesn't have the removable side rails? All my rails come off leaving a completely flat surface (other than what I've added such as antenna). I actually liked it that way but put the side rails on when moving from my last duty station and haven't taken them back off. Not having a roof tent, I'm presuming the other reason you haven't mentioned a sideways mount is due to dimensions of the folded tent?

The Front Runner SA site doesn't show pics specifically of the light brackets, but you can get an idea from an LR3 and D110 pic in their gallery. Looks like a bracket over the rack outer member positioning the lights above or below the rack. In both cases the lights are forward of the rack itself. Personally, I don't like that because of the more overgrown nature of trails in North America, other than the desert SW. I used rivnuts on the backside of the rack outer rail and made some small L-brackets to then mount FF300s inverted, but such that the front face of the lights is aft of the leading edge of the rack. This almost always works to allow the rack to take the beating from the tree limb or branches.

More or less the same on the rear. Rivnut mounted a cut-down bracket which was supplied with the LR work light. (I ****ed up and in an impatient hurry mounted it to the outside of the rack,mounting screws visible. Didn't want to make the time to fashion a new bracket.). Anyway this light is also positioned below main rack level.

As for wiring - some goes up the A-pillar behind the snorkel, some is routed out the back door, along the rain gutter, up a leg of the rack, then along the inside rail to appropriate locations.

I don't think you will need TWO work lights on the back, but to each his own...I have 4 on the front of the rack and 1 worklamp and its plenty, if I want to light up the area around my truck I use a flashlight or lantern while camping, but for underbody lights, here are 4 rubber cased worklights (hellas I think) that we put on my buddies truck...cheaper and more light than the LED's too, unless you are going for neons or something :Wow1:

if you need pics of how i had the hella FF300s mounted on the hannibal just let me know and i can post what i have. my truck is in the shop right now, so i wont be able to tank any more angles than the ones i already have until after it is returned.

what are you guys using these days for fuse blocks? or are you just tying in to other circuits and using in-line fuses?

Not sure what you mean by not mentioning sideways mount. That's how I've been running my tent now. And to make it easier, I do leave one side rail off, but it stops at the curve and the joint where the little elehpant logo stainless steel plate is. I want to rails on as they keep stuff on like dry bags I pack with softer items. The dry bags work well because they keep moisture out but also the bug juice. When I get to campsites my tent cover and dry bags at the front are completely covered in a thin layer of bug guts. It's gross. Plus I have a shovel, a hi-lift and a pull-pal. I have a shovel mount from hannibal, but until now, have been either packing the pullpal and hi-lift inside, or carefully strapping them down on the rack with lots of those round tie doen'st that hannibal sells for the channels, plus using the rails themselves to keep everything in place. I'd also like to keep the lights on side and back tucked behind the rails.

I have limb riser tabs on my RTE bumper, but haven't tried them on my rack yet since I'm not sure if the cable will ride high enough to clear the hood since I don't have a top front rail. I'd like to use limb risers though plus mount side/rear lights behind the rails to protect them from getting torn off by brush. I'd also like to fashion some sort of <---hi-lift----> bracket for the hi-lift if it's mounted outside the rails so that brush skips over the top and base of it when going forward or backing up in bush trails.

Details pics of this last part would be good. I'm having trouble visualizing that without pics. But thanks for the info.

I keep hearing people say they are wiring things out the rear door, but you must mean above the rear door?? That would make more sense to me. I'm finally not scared to cut metal or drill holes, so I'm game for almost anything. Cutting metal for the new Greg Davis bumper broke me in.

I want to order one of these. Do you run the one with or without negative block? I THINK I understand the difference, but I'm not sure I understand WHY one would choose one or the other. I'm going to use the rear fog switch for my rear lights, but I need something to run the sides and underbody. I need that fuse box ASAP. I sent a picture of my wiring under the hood to Mike at Hellroaring and his response was something like, "Good Lord!!" Lol
