Nikson's XJ Snorkel Build

By starting this thread, I am hoping to provide various build information.
As impossible as it might seem, in my opinion it should be a pretty simple process for anyone who has a basic "know-how" about holding tools & some fab work.

One of the reasons I've considered doing my own is obviously cost. In my personal opinion, I think its pretty ridiculous that piece of plastic like snorkel would cost anywhere from $300-500. I understand that its a patent thing probably, and being "THE ONE" in the market...

with all that aside...my main reason would be the design flaw in SAFARI style, that in my opinion is not a "small" deal.

Sorry if I am being a bit BOLD with my wording here...

With following pictures I am hoping to help you visualize my direction of thought.

If you closely look at the following picture, You will see that the cables that go from bumper to the roof rack protect only up to a certain point, and no where near close to protecting the snorkel part from being ripped off by something on its way. I think that actual snorkel head is just out there, ready to be ripped off.

Here is something in my line of thought...
Notice the BUNGYs going from bumper to roof rack (area of coverage)

being around some of the Hummers (H1 in specific), showed me just that, what I wanted to see what is needed to be done on a Cherokee (or any other), and not worry about snorkel being damaged during your travels.

Or this way...

Places to run "plumbing"

Passenger side - seems to make more sense to put it this way, since it would be blocking less view on the front for the driver, as well as better access through the "wall"

Top trim of the HEATER/WIPERs removed

Well, with these pictures in consideration, I assume you get a basic idea on what I am hoping to achieve by going this route.

For deeper water crossings, an extension will be used to raise the head unit of the snorkel up to the roof level (or could be done higher if necessary) :)

I'll keep this posted as process goes on...

great idea i all for it but getting rid of the wipers and cutting through the firewall like that. I dont like that! With cutting out the fender at least you can put a new fender on if you decide to can the snorkel. i will be watching this for a while.

great stuff. good luck building.

Californians love safari snorkels cuz they're CARB legal. We're liable to get flagged and failed for having a non-CARB snorkel/modification.

most referree's here in san diego have been well aware that the Safari snorkels are cali-legal.

I agree, though, about pricing. I remember the snorkel for my 1st gen. 4runner being in the 250.00 range back in 2001-2002...

Prices these days are kinda outragous.

I look forward to seeing pics.

Have considered, but will try to keep it "civilized" if you know what I mean as far as brackets and mounting it... :)

Dont really care much for the "FARM" style look... :)

Not really familiar with all the laws, I guess you guys in Cali are a bit different from the "rest"... :)

I dont believe Oregon has anything to say about it, nor am I making any modification that will alter how engine works & emissions, etc...

So is the hassle really worth it???

Anyone looked at it this way...

Anyone had some experience with the snorkels & branch / objects getting in the way???

Hit-n-run email before bed... :)

Couple of things occur to me:

- Make sure that the snorkel head doesn't interfere with the hood when the hood is propped open.

- I'm not a fan of cowl intakes that are in the cowl itself. If the engine ever backfires the fumes will go into the cabin (if I'm not mistaken). Also, just in general usage fumes will likely migrate to the cabin (think of over run going down a steep hill - low vacuum situations). We have enough carcinogens in our lives.

- Is it possible to use a "hummeresque" oil bath filter instead?

- What about doing a more traditional routing of steel or plastic tubing but have it placed on the inside of the A-pillar (viewed from front). Route to passenger A-pillar to keep driver sight lines clear.

Nope! I've ran them on two of my previous rigs and finally got one mounted on mine the other day. I've never had an issue with them being in the way...at all.

So would you say its safe to have that sticking out as it is in Safari/ARB setup and not worry about it cracking & breaking off when branches hit it?

Thats my concern... This is how my rig looks now... you could see some of the RUBS of stuff on my truck...

I'll put the options out there and see what I'll come up with before I start to cut things up... :)

by the looks of the first pic if you had any doubts about a branch just turn the snorkel head around and the branchs should slide up and over and if you have limb risers these will also help. i have never ran a snorkel....yet so take this with a grain of salt. hope this helps

I've been suggested the same at one of the Russian Jeep site (where they are a bit HARDCORE about forest travels) :)

Anyways, I've seen a video on one of the snorkels somewhere and cant remember exactly which one or where i've seen it...
but they had a Jeep run over it with a wheel, showing how strong it is...:coffee:

They are a lot more resilient than you are giving them credit for ;)

(flexed right back into shape afterwords and is still holding shape nearly 10 years later too)

I've gone through a handful of ram grills on my snorkels but grills are cheap and take a few minutes to swap. We popped the snorkel head off of a OEM Nissan Patrol setup no fewer than a dozen times on a tight trail on Aussie's Fraser Island, though we didn't have the tools to tighten it down properly and it was a rental afterall :D
