Neat CJ based pickup idea

Start with a CJ of some flavour (bonus points for Nissan SD33 diesel powered CJ10a), add a M101 trailer bed. Discuss.

I'd rock it... I'd rock it daily! Although I would have a Small block chevy ;-)

Chances of me sourcing a SD33 powered one is close to zero; more of a gas guy anyway.

I'd probably do a stroker. :)

Was thinking more Jeep 4.7.

Whaddya think, 37s? HP 44 in the front and a shaved Corp 14 in the rear?

Nah... that's an old CJ10 (nearly as rare as an FC)... throwing a POS Chevy motor in it is just plain sacreligious... Now a Nice Mopar Poly-head 318 or and injected 5.9 out of a ZJ.

Personaly I think it'd make a great truck for a 4BT swap... Gassers just don't do it for me out on the trail. Diesel is where it's AT ;)

Cheers

This one's still under construction. Haven't decided what engine/drivetrain will go in it yet.

I'm a huge fan of the newer Chevy 4.8, 5.3, and 5.7 motors. They swap nicely, are very efficient, good power, and pretty simple with aftermarket injection or carb.

I have owned two CJ-10as, and shortened a M-416 bed for use on mine. The width was much better suited to the CJ-width tub, IMO. I do like the look of the M101 bed, but it should be narrowed to look right, IMO.

Mine both had the Nissan SD-33 motor. They ran well, but they're horribly underpowered. Even with 4.10 gears and 34s, even a slight incline would cause the speedometer to drop almost immediately. If I had one readily accessible to me, I'd use it (in fact, I built custom motor mounts to install one in a Scrambler previously, but sold the project off). I'd seriously look at different motors, otherwise. I will say that I was very impressed with the pep of a N/A 6.2L Chevy diesel that was in an '92 Suburban I had for a time. Some people claim it's a dog, but mine (even though it wasn't turbo) did very well.

Here's the end result from my '10a project.

Ingenius.

What's up with the front end on that CJ???

That's the "standard" front end on CJ-10 pick-ups, and CJ-10a aircraft tugs. I still have a mint-condition '10a grill left over from one of the ones I owned. I'm not sure yet what I'll be doing with it...wall art, future project, possibly sell (???).

Looks to me like the rear axle should be moved back a couple of inches.

I'd either go with an LSx series engine or look into the diesels used in small box vans - the 4BT being just one of unknown to me options. A 6.5tD would work for me too.
