Running Without A Cat? Or Both Of Them?

SW,

Any performance exhaust shop will have the Cat By-Pass sensors, in other words, they plug into the stright pipes and no ECU Codes.

I know of a US version Murcielago running straight pipes with the Bby-pass and absolutely no Bank errors ( those cars have 2 banks CEl style lights )

Thanks for the idea rugbier. I actually wasn't aware of that type of sensor.

Now I do have an o2 emulator that plugs in where the o2 sensor wire should, which obviously does the same thing with the computer. However you either have to remove the spot for the o2 in the pipe completely or use the sensor as a plug.

But then again I only have one, and I know they don't make them anymore, or atleast the place I got mine from years ago. So I'll try and track myself down a few of the ones you mentioned. I like the concept of that sensor better anyways.

I remember those O2 emulators from back in the day. The EPA cracked down on those things. Shut down a couple of companies. Maybe they're available from Ebay/China now. I might have one kicking around somewhere.

Or buy a simple plug, which they do sell. I have one of those too. In fact, you could use a SS bolt, I forget the thread.

Yand on top of all that they are federally Mandated and required by law on any street driven vehicle.

Well that's not exactly correct. They are mandated for some vehicle engine/chassis combinations. Many 80s p/u over 1/2 ton didn't have cats although other vehicles did. None of the diesels have them. BUT I am being argumentative, as this doesn't apply to the current discussion.

so Wolf, why would you like to keep them off, as opposed to say a high flow cat? a simple bent piece of SS mounted between your cat and your driveshaft should dissipate the heat etc...

If you have four sensors and not two then you run the risk of the ecu decreasing the amount of fuel until it hits an acceptable post cat O2 level. so you would experience a reduction in power. if this doesn't bother you then you should be fine.

Unforutnately, it's all too often about the ear dyno. It's louder, so it must be faster. I remember back in the day, when we used to remove the resonator chambers off the factory intake tubes. More power!

Me? I prefer rotary mufflers, and not worrying about it anymore.
