Childs to the Grand Canyon!!

Like last year, we decided to incorporate some pre and post-event activities around the Fat Tire Toys for Tots event we volunteer for every year. Our first stop would be Childs, then the bike/overland route that would take us from Flagstaff to the south rim of the Grand Canyon all off highway. We then finished off the trip with a stop in Sedona for lunch before heading home.

Very cool! You wouldn't happen to have any maps of your route or anything like that would you? My friend and I are trying to plan a trip to the Grand Canyon but have no idea where to start.

I was always to chicken to try crossing the river at Childs. Did you visit Verde Hot Springs?

I'd like to see that, too. Did you take the old stage coach road? I've ridden my mountain bike that way from Flag before, but some was single track. I'd like to see your route. Did you look into taking dirt all the way from Tucson? I bet there is a way to go the height of the state on mostly dirt.

Yes, we did visit the hot springs, they were pretty cool! Click on the link to check out the pictures of them: http://blog.cruzadventures.com/2010/08/fat-tire-2010.html

I will have to see if the owner would like to post up. I don't believe they are on expo......yet!

I believe we were on sections of the old stage coach route. We started near the nordic center (during the flagstaff to grand canyon stretch) and took a series of forest roads north all the up to the 301 (Grandview lookout). I don't have a nice map to display at the moment, but that's the basic jist of it.

Now there's a thought to go all dirt from Tucson! I would love to do something like that. Much of the stretch from Tucson to Phoenix could be done by way of the San Pedro. You would just need to find a way around the Superstitions and then take the 24/16 out of camp creek up into Childs. From there plenty of roads exist to get through Flagstaff. It could be done! Superstitions are the trick from what I can see at a quick glance...
