Con-Ferr

I scored a Con-Ferr from CL for $35 last night, but I am not finding accessories on the net. I realize they were bought out, but if anyone knows of a source, please let me know.

Also, if you have devised a simple way to attach Hi-lift, shovel, etc to a Con-Ferr style rack, please chime in.

I posted on the classifieds for WTB as well.

Thanks

I have the Hi-lift mount and the axe/shovel mount, I will sell you. But you will still need the attachment plates. I do not think I still have them. Did you get a 4" or 6"?

Here is what I did. This is before I got my IPOR rear bumper and swingout but it worked awesome. I don't like have the hi-lift low because you run the risk of not getting to it when you really need it. Been there done that. So I mounted it on the short Con-Fer rack I have (Have three currently). Just used square plate, welded a short heavy wall tube and then welded the plate to the rack in such a way that the long grade 8 bolt I am using is pressed against the bottom or the top rail. This meant I only needed one tool to remove or install the hi-lift. Out of the way, looked good and never failed.

I am at work tonight, so I am not sure height, but I am thinking its 4". I found some stuff at 4Wheel parts, but I am not sure if it will work since its for the Defender racks.

I am interested, if I can get your stuff to work.

I have the 4", welded with two cross bars. I just found this link:

I am reading through the old Con-Ferr material to determine the best way to mount this to my truck, 4runner, or both.

I am not clear on what parts you have. Are the axe/shovel mounts not operable without the attachment plates? or are you referring to attachment plates for attaching the rack to the vehicle? You can PM me or keep the thread going.

Clean install! My problem is that I am welderless, but maybe I will have one under the tree at Christmas along with a book titled "Welding for Dummies".

Off Road Unlimited has the rack mounts and stuff you need. They also make the Defender Racks.

I think they bought out Con-Ferr

I went to my local truck accessory store that had shells. Looked in there supply book and ordered the gutter mount brackets from them. At the time it was cheaper than ordering from ORU. I'll see if I can find the company that the brackets where ordered from.
Also made my hi-lift brackets out of some old metal bracketery that I had lying around. Since most of the brackets clamp to the top and bottom bars , its not hard and no welding required.

DefenderRack is the current incarnation of Con-Ferr. They should have all the pieces you need.

OK here is some pics of what I have. The parts that are missing are flat plates that bolt on the inside and out side of the rack (sandwiching the rack). Then the Hi-lift mounts, mount to the flat plates.

In my searching, this is what I have found:

ORS did buy out Con-Ferr, and their defender racks are similar to the Con-Ferr. However, the Defender series uses round tubes and the Con-Ferr racks were square tubing so the Defender accessory mounts will not work on the Con-Ferr racks. However, the mounts to attach the racks to the vehicle are interchangeable.

For mounting, diamondrax http://www.diamondrax.com/heavy-duty-rain-gutter-clamps.html offers the mounts and they will work with their racks and with the Con-Ferr racks.

Now, I have to decide how I want to mount the rack to my 84 4runner and my 03 Tacoma. I know that I want the rack mounted on my roof on my Taco, not the campershell because the shell is higher than the cab and I would rather keep it more centrally located. It looks like Yakima q towers are the way to go, or doing a permanent mount with old style Con-Ferr brackets, but I don't think I would like how it would look without the rack attached.

For the 4runner, I am getting mixed info on using the rain gutter mounts on the topper. Diamondrax has a very beefy mount, but it might be too much for the fiberglass shell. Anyone mount their rack on their 4runner shell? experiences?

So I was wrong - sort of.

Thanks for the info on DiamondRax - I have always liked the Con-Ferr design, and nothing has ever looked the same. I was considering a DefenderRack, but now am seriously thinking about the DiamondRax.
