Old body (1990) Suburban front/rear bumper options?

Greetings to the collective wisdom....

I have resurrected my 90 GMC Suburban and need some direction on aftermarket sheetmetal style bumpers. I have done some homework on these but the prices sent me muttering to the booze cabinet. I need to replace the rear bumper and would also like a swing-out tire carrier if possible. I would like a front winch carrier style bumper too....but I have to admit a certain amount of vanity here...I'd like something that integrates lights or a light bar if possible. Suggestions for manufacturer's or plans I can have fab'ed up?

Thanks

http://diy4x.com/ is another place to look.

Ultimately, you will probably need to do something custom. It isn't a toyota or a jeep that has tons of aftermarket options. Find somebody local and they might be able to build you something for less than what you would pay to buy something and have it shipped. Steel is pricey these days though. The raw materials for my bumpers and sliders cost around $800. So, keep that in mind when you're looking at prices.

You can do a concealed winch mount with your stock bumper. Sorry no extra lights.

Can you please post up more details about that mod? Pics would be nice too :sombrero: Super clean install. I want a winch but I don't want to pay $800+ for a bumper to put it on.

Thanks in advance.

This is one of those projects I finished just before I left on a trip. My intention was to pull everything back apart and clean it up for paint. I never have. After I got the front bumper off, I cut out a couple of reinforcing plates to bolt inside the frame rails. I cut out a piece of 1/4" steel that would slide between the plates and propped it in place. I set the winch up on it and through trial and error, moved things around until they fit. After tack welding the ends of the 1/4" steel plate, I pulled it out and welded everything up and added the stiffener across the bottom. I had to pull the gear box off the end of the winch and clock it around so the lever was in a better location, and had to relocate my oil cooler lines, but that was about it as far as mounting. Mine has the feet down, and I know some people prefer to mount feet forward, but i don't think I could have done that as easily and still get to the engagement lever. My suspicion is that the ones that have broken a winch with it mounted feet down may have had a missing or loose mounting bolt. I also originally had concerns about the bumper mounts being strong enough to support the fairlead when pulling at an angle, but I have winched at about every angle except straight down, and nothing has moved yet. That being said, I'll probably add some tabs behind the bumper to tie the fairlead to the winch mounting plate if I get around to pulling it out for paint.

Wow, nice job! I had the Warn "Hidden" winch set up on my F250 and loved it...looked at trying to fab something similar on my 98 Suburban but there doesn't seem to be enough room with the radiator and all....what year Jimmy is that?

It's a 90. I haven't looked under the front of a 98, but as the vehicles get newer, they sure get congested under the hood.
