Yes, we're all waiting for Chrysler-Fiat to put the new 3.6L Pentastar into the Wrangler series, but until then, is there anyone out there running the 3.6L Pentastar in their Jeep Anything who can give us a User's Report?

Torque (will it pull stumps or recover a semi from the ditch)?

Horsepower (also read snappy pip)?

Gas milage (14,16, 18, 22, OMG)?

IMHO, the differences between the 3.6L vs 4.0L will have to be a pretty remarkable to justify the expense of buying a new Wrangler.

A little hard to quantify consider so much is based on gearing and what scenario the motor is tuned for ie mileage or torque or horsepower/revs.

They're going to put that engine in the Gr. Caravans.
That will be a great way to gauge its level of reliability since Dodge sells a LOT of those vans.

Top....

I would love to hear a review of the 2011 grand with the pentastar. It is about the closest thing to the wrangler in weight.

On paper is looks like a good idea....at least for the 2-door JK

Please oh please let them ditch the 4-spd auto! 5-speed auto please!

I also hope they offer the E85 compatible version in the Wrangler.

The additional power is definitely needed in the JK, I didn't realize until I was reading an article on the Ford Raptor the other day that the JKU weighs more! I still don't understand Chrysler's reluctance to put a V8 or diesel in the JK. My wife would love a new GC, but since we just bought her a new Subaru Forester this spring she'll have to wait a while.

Numbers

Here are some interesting numbers comparing the JK with different motors.

Transmission and differential gearing will color the results, but the ratios between horse power and vehicle weights are an excellent way to estimate the relative feeling of quickness.

Note: The lower the power to weight ratio, the more 'snappy pip' you will feel:

2010 JK 202HP@5200rpm (3.8L)
3760#/202HP=18.61

2012 JK 280HP@6400rpm (3.6L Pentastar)
3760#/280HP =13.42

TJ 190HP@4600RPM (4L straight six)
3437#/190HP = 18.08

In my dreams, I see a Jeep Wrangler with new Ford Twin Turbo 3.5L EcoBoost truck engine (available in Feb 2011 F150) producing 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm and 365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. Up to 90 percent of its peak torque is available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm.

JK with 3.5L Twin Turbo EcoBoost
3760#/365HP =10.30

New Turbo V6's burning E87 are coming. They are light, powerful and pull like a diesel...I live in hope.

Interesting stuff to be sure. It does seem like the direct injection turbo gas engines may render diesels unnecessary to some extent. My daily driver is a 2009 Mazdaspeed3 with a turbocharged 2.3 liter 4 cylinder. It averages 25-26mpg, will get up to 30mpg in highway driving, and runs like a scalded cat when I want it to. Turbocharging definitely has advantages, and with new combustion/injection technology and the computer technology to control and optimize these systems the sky is the limit.

:sombrero: I'm pretty happy with my (modified) '08 JKU Rubi with the auto, but

I would really consider the new 3.6L, only if it comes with a 5 spd auto and better cooling system-otherwise mine is ADEQUATE

Diesel VS Gas in USA

In Europe, diesel is about $1 cheaper than gas creating a strong demand for small diesel trucks/cars/suv's.

But for reasons known only to Big Oil and the UAW, in the USA diesel fuel is more expensive than gas making the market for small diesel anything weak.

From what I've read, the 'up-charge' for the twin turbo Ford 3.5L EcoBoost motor will be about $1,750. The PentaStar has the potential for a single or twin turbo and I would be happy to pay a similar amount for this feature. That said, the Jeep drive train may have to be beefed up to handle the increased torque.

For the record, I want it all...Light Weight, More Horse Power, Massive Torque and Good Milage....

Hey guys I work at a Dodge Chrysler Jeep Dealership in PA and I will just say this I was very suprised with this new motor. I had a new 2011 Grand Cheer for the weekend two weeks ago that was fully loaded with the suspension tid bits! It was awesome! I did a drive from Central PA to Wash DC and got around 26.7 MPG and I was on the throttle alot! It has great acceleration and is actually pretty fast. I had a blast in it and man that grand cher handled awesome even in the corners! It gets my stamp of approval and the motor seems to be good. Its a little so far but no issues so far at all!!!:smiley_drive:

The crew at JeepForum.com are discussing this a lot right now.
The common opinion is the current 4-speed auto won't handle the torque/power of the penstar, so they will absolutely have to go with something different, but there is no certainty what that might be.
Everyone has fingers crossed for a 5-speed.

The GC has been using the W5A580 for a bit now, even with the last v-6, I think in the 2005-2010 versions.

The factory JK Diesel auto uses the 545RFE in the overseas edition.

I think either one would be great for the JK. The 2011 GC with the Pentastar uses the W5A580. We know that the Pentastar bolts to that tranny, and we know the 545RFE fits in the JK chassis.

I sure hope they don't keep the 4spd auto, I just don't see a reason.

From the 2011 European press release....

Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited with New 2.8-liter Diesel Engine, Stop/Start Technology, New Interior and New Body-color Hard Top

Jeep continues to refine the successful Wrangler formula by combining its legendary, benchmark capability with a new 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine with fuel-saving Stop/Start technology, a new and upgraded interior, and a new body-color hard top for the popular Sahara model.

Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited now offer a new 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine for markets outside North America. This new engine improves power to 200 hp DIN (147 kW) at 3,600 rpm, a 13-percent improvement over the prior 2.8-liter diesel engine. Torque for the new engine comes in at 410 N•m at 2,000-3,200 rpm with the six-speed manual transmission and 460 N•m at 1,600-2,600 rpm with the W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission.

The proven W5A580 automatic transmission is new to Wrangler and will deliver smooth shifts and optimum fuel consumption. The W5A580 transmission includes adaptive electronic control or Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver-interactive manual control and an electronically modulated torque converter clutch.

Jeep Wrangler's diesel engine, when paired with the manual transmission, incorporates Stop/Start technology – the first application of this technology on a Chrysler Group vehicle. With Stop/Start, the engine is shut off when the vehicle is stopped, the shift gear is in Neutral, and the clutch is released. The engine then restarts automatically when the clutch pedal is depressed. Drivers can deactivate the technology via a button on the dashboard, and an icon displays in the instrument panel to indicate the Stop/Start status.

An upgraded starter and alternator improve durability, and a DC/DC power converter maintains electronic feature functionality while the vehicle is stopped. Stop/Start technology improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions by managing the amount of time the engine runs. For the new Jeep Wrangler family, fuel economy is improved by up to 13 percent, and CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 14 percent.

Other improvements and features incorporated into the new Euro V, 2.8-liter diesel engine include:
• Four valves per cylinder and double overhead camshaft (DOHC) with belt drive
• 1800-bar common-rail fuel injection system
• Piezo electric injectors
• Variable geometry turbocharger
• New composite intake manifold
• New exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system
• Reduced friction ring pack
• Electric swirl control
• Oil and exhaust temperature sensors
• Standard diesel particulate filter (DPF)
• Additional adjustments for improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)

The new Jeep Wrangler continues to be the most capable off-road vehicle and now brings a significantly quieter cabin, pleasing on-road ride and handling and reduced overall NVH. Wrangler now gives customers a driving experience similar to the mid-size Jeep Cherokee, but with the 4x4 mastery to handle any extreme off-road conditions.

Jeep Wrangler's interior highlights include a redesigned instrument panel and new storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. A new console and upgraded door armrest areas boast comfortable touch points, while a redesigned center stack is easier to reach and operate. Automatic temperature control, heated seats and power heated mirrors are now available, and drivers and passengers will enjoy enhanced visibility courtesy of larger rear windows.

New steering-wheel controls allow the driver to operate the radio, speed control, hands-free phone and other vehicle functions while keeping hands on the wheel. A new USB device interface connects to storage devices (thumb drives and most MP3 players) for use with the vehicle's Media Center, which now includes streaming Bluetooth audio.

In line with traditional Jeep design, hex-head bolts are utilized throughout the interior and are used to mount a "Jeep, Since 1941" inlay onto the new passenger grab handle.

To provide a more premium appearance, Jeep Wrangler Sahara models boast a new, premium, body-color hard top. In addition, several new Wrangler colors will be available, including Deep Cherry Red Crystal, Detonator Yellow, Sahara Tan, Cosmos Blue and Bright White.

The new Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited will be available in markets outside North America starting in early 2011.

If I would have to guess, I would say the USA wrangler will get the new 5-speed W5A580 with the Pentastar. They are using it in the Grand Cherokee and it is showing up in the JK already overseas.

Gear ratios are....

1st-3.59
2nd-2.19
3rd-1.41
4th-1.00
5th-0.83
Rev-3.16

It looks like a GREAT option!

Fingers crossed.

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler will be order-able June 15th 2011. Until then we can only guess and its highly likely you will see the 5-speed W5A580.

My local Dealer told me January or February 2011, Jeep Customer Service advised me to check frequently and now you post 'order-able June 15th 2011'...As with all things Jeep, you have to mix these all together and decode to mean, 'You can believe it when you see it.'
