Ancient Warn 8274 - What can I expect to fix?

I am having a Warn bumper installed on my JK Unlimited next week, and plan to mount my ancient 8274 winch that's been sitting for 20 years in the garage to it. The winch saw some use, but not much, back in the day and was retired in fine working condition when the CJ-7 went to the salvage yard after a hard rollover. What sort(s) of things should I expect to need to fix or replace to rehabilitate it?

Thanks,
John

Do a full service, take everything apart, check the condition, replace if necessary, regrease. Might want to clean up the old drum, check the condition of the wire. How are the solenoids, etc?

Sounds like a plan. In my googling of it, it doesn't seem like it's too terribly full of tiny parts and such and should be not-so traumatic to work on. I suppose that can be my Winter project..

the wire is in pretty decent shape, except for the last few feet or so which I'll trim..

Don't know about the solenoids..

Thanks..

I have a friend who is looking to rebuild one of these also. Is there service support from Warn (IE: manuals, parts, etc.)?

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread here.

My understanding is yes. While I am no expert, I have seen a writeup in 4WD and Sport Utility magazine for rebuiling/refurbishing and an episode on Extreme 4x4 where they rebuilt one. Warn still (as of then) sold all the parts, and even will do the refurb for you if needed. Contact them.

heres a link to everything u need to know or want to know about rebuilding an 8274. i followed it and everything came out perfect. it really easy and there arent any small pieces other than the keys on the brake. some have problems getting the brake apart and have to have them pressed apart. really no big deal though. take ur time and have fun with it.

Great link! I think that about covers anyone's needs, let alone my friend's! Thank you very much.

FYI, If you end up needing parts/etc., our Customer Service Department should be able to help you source some of the rarer items.

Nope, can't do it!

You see, I'm the official guy for disposing of old WARN winches in the Midwest!

And as you can see, he's closer to me!

On a serious note, make sure the brake is in good working order. I know you can get it re-lined if it needs it.

Here's a place that will have parts also: 4 Wheel Drive Center of MN in St. Louis Park (sorry, no website:5711 W 36th St
Saint Louis Park, MN 55416
district: Saint Louis Park
+1 952.927.8811 ) I believe they can reline the brake.

And a couple of articles:

This one, by Mike Knorr, is about upgrading, but has some good pics of disassembly: http://bc4x4.com/tech/2000/upgrade8274/upgrade8274.cfm

As does this one: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/index.html

:iagree:

4 Wheel Drive Center is an autorized WARN service center.

Redding four wheel drive which is WARN's parts wing (I think) is the best place for buying anything. Jack (again, I think) is the best guy to ask for. I've re-sealed my drum and replaced the entire solenoid pack on mine and Redding was a great resource. If you have the money, buy the 4.6 horse splined shaft motor which is an upgrade from the 2.5 hp keyed shaft affair you've likely got now. That's all I've got left to do to mine to make it basically equal to a brand new 8274. Great, fast and the sexiest winch you can get.
