...Possibly it was Wells and Paul Warner that were carrying their race bike to an event in Colorado...

The date is likely 1912 or 13, that magneto in the 2nd to last photo was introduced in mid 1912.

thanks for sharing the pics with us.

Pete,

The car with the crated bike on it was an American-made right-hand drive car that my great-grandpa (Elmer Gully) was driving in some of the photos. My uncle told me the make, but I can't remember what it was called. I think Elmer and two other guys were trading off between riding bikes and driving the car. Not sure what the story is behind that.

Just this morning I got an email forwarded to me by my uncle with some photos of an old "yard long photograph" that was taken before the start of this tour. It says "Leaving Garden City Aug 11, 1912". I don't have time to post them now, but I will when I get some time.

Cool stuff!

So cool... I just keep coming back to this page and looking at these photos! I've got to stop gawking and get back to work. But please do send me a note with your email address. I'd love to write a feature article on these. I can probably identify that car with the help of a car friend of mine. And maybe fill in some of the gaps in the story. August 1912. Damn, that was right on the money, mid 1912.

Unfortunately, I just got an email from my uncle asking that these photos not be posted in a public forum. I've gone back and deleted most of them.

Sorry guys.

That's a shame but I really enjoyed the exhibition while it was here. Hopefully sometime in the future a more permanent location will be found for an even wider audience to appreciate.

In the mean time, if anybody has old motoring or mountaineering photos please share them (In a different thread!) I don't want to hijack this thread but when I'm struggling climbing or shivering at a belay I like to remember these hardy folks: The Alpine Club Album.

Thanks again!
