Sleeping Mats

My GF and I along with my dog did a test run to see how the camper shell would work out. All in all it went pretty well. It rained but being in the shell worked out great. The only problem we had was that sleeping on the bed of the truck was not the most comfortable thing in the world. What sleeping mats do you guys use/recommend? I would prefer something that doesn't inflate because the dog will eventually put a hole in it.

Homemade Pad?

Thanks for the link. I would buy that in a heart beat but it is to wide to fit in the camper shell. I found an online store (The Foam Factory) and I think I will buy a sheet of Super Soft 3" thick open cell foam from them and then put some kind of cover on it like the one from Cabela's. Hopefully this will solve our sleeping problems.

just a note on the inflatable beds out there ( : happy to hear you are going to find a more solid solution : ) . . .

I see you have a ford ranger in your signature...so the 2nd generation Tacoma we had for 3 seasons is about the same size bed. We utilized a "Truck Bedz" inflatable air mattress for ~2 seasons and after one nite found ourselves bringing along a mattress topper as the wheel well cut outs were literally a PITA!

I'm not sure about that Supersoft foam you mention so forgive me if I'm wrong, but most soft foam is not comfortable for sleeping- especially if you're a side sleeper. It compresses too much and your hips end up bottoming out (especially if you engage in extracurricular activities; so I hear anyways). Get something firmer or with a dual density. You'll want some sort of cover for it too or it will get pretty dirty and get dog hairs stuck all in it. The cover will protect it while sliding in and out as well as dog nails.

I just got one of the Cabela's Alaskan pads and while I haven't slept on it yet it does appear it will fit my needs pretty well.

Look into self inflating mattresses. There are several different brands, but the 3"-4" thick ones work best. They come single wide with velcro tabs to connect 2 together if needed. The house brands at Cabelas, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, run about 70.00 each, but are well worth it. I use the 3" one in the back of the Jeep.

Do you have a platform or are you sleeping on the bed level?

Plywood or a rubber bed mat with carpet and foam works well as a base then use foam pads or therma rest type mats. I have also found chaise loung pads work well too.

I bought this pad off of the Springbar Tent website. It's a little bulky, but very comfortable.

Sleeping on the bed with a sheet of plywood down.

Bed Rug makes a poly /carpet liner for trucks that looks pretty good. It covers the sides bottom and wheel wells.

If you have the money go for Exped mats.
Even think they are cheaper than Thermarest...
I got a Synmat 7DLX with built in pump before xmas and have never slept as good on any mat.

rolled dimensions of Cabela's pad?

If space is not a concern, I would go with the thick foam pads from Cabela's.
It has a canvas cover that holds the dirt off pretty well. couple of sizes. dog wont tear it up. I had that issue

Does anybody know the dimensions of the deluxe Cabela's pad when it's rolled up? I can't find it on their website. The customer reviews are generally very good, but a couple of them refer to the size of the rolled pad as a 'water heater'. That's not appealing.
