Truck Cap frustrations

There are all sorts of great things about driving older cars, but parts availability isn't one of them. I've called leer, are, snugtop, vista, superior and no one makes a fiberglass campershell for an 85 toyota longbed. Even flippac doesn't make one for my truck. All I'm looking for is a simple cab hi fiberglass truck cap. No canvas or aluminum. Anyone know of any other makers out there?

How long is the "long bed"? I know of one that is 6'. Came off a 93 Toyota. Just sitting on a side yard. Might be free to a good home.

I've been looking for a contractor style shell for my Tacoma and can find long bed yota ones all day on CL. The only downside most are not fiberglass. There are quite a few out there though. I would try searchtempest so you can search more than one CL at once if you go that route.

I would take a look at Gemtop website and see what they have available if you want new. I am running there Workmaster on my Tundra.

They dont offer a regular fiberglass cap. They do make a steel cap, but even if I was looking for that, they stop at 1995.

Also, food for thought - my 1983 Datsun currently wears a cap from a 1991 Toyota shortbed. Might want to get out the tape measure and see what could work.

Been there done that too, but the problem is that a 7 foot bed is kind of rare, and what new production models there are that have them are wider than my truck.

What about a newer model s10? Dontthey have that same bed size? Best thing would veto dmeasure and just check craigslist. That what i did.

Canopy....

having owned a 1985 longbed toyota for almost 10 years (sold it in '09) i totally understand your frustration in trying to find a canopy.

craigslist became my best friend when i switched from the camper it came with to something smaller and lighter weight. craigslist is probably gonna be your best bet with that truck. however, you really might want to call gemtop. they might be willing to make a steel workmaster series cap to specifically fit your truck. probably ain't gonna be cheap, but it'll be real nice.

good luck.

these are in portland and salem, or:

I'm really set on fiberglass for a variety of reasons including maintenance and noise, but primarily fit. It matches all of the bevels and angles of the cab rather than the "close enough" you get with a giant sheet of metal folded in thirds. There is a company that makes an aluminum cap that will fit so I have that option but really don't want it for the above mentioned reason. That and from what I've read, the fiberglass is lighter.

You could also look into getting a fiberglass shop into extending it out a foot or so. I work for a surfboard repair shop in CA and can't imagine it being a big issue to extend one out a foot and make it look nice also.
