My M416 Build

Digs

Thanks Phil. I was wondering how play sand would work. I got kinda scared when i saw that most of the media on the market was $25-50 per bag.

I also used premium playground sand. I also collected and reused the sand. The blaster I rented for the project had a strainer that allowed this with very little problems. I think I had to fix clogs 5-6 times but it was caused by condensation from the air not the sand.

Did the premium playground sand cause any major pitting? It seems kind of coarse to blast with.

no if you look at the first page you can see how it works the part that looks pitted is b/c the rust was much worse in those spots
sorry but to answer your question i don't think the pitting was too bad
then again i'm not considering mine a show piece it will be used, so for me it doesn't have to be perfect just cleaned up and rattle canned

thanks phil:)

I have used it as original paint after primer on the tub. It looked good but did not last as long (IMHO) as the standard paint which I have since used and covered. I also like the flat paint better.

gixxer, I agree w/ what Lee said too. I spray painted a bumper and roof rack w/ the Rustoleum Hammered. It didn't seem to last long on the bumper. Any little scrap and it scratched off. Thinking that it was because I rattle canned it, i redid the tire carrier and bumper. I used the quart can and made several coats. It has seemed to hold up a bit longer, but still gets knicked very easily.

hope that helps your decision.

later, mike

oh also if you use the camo can spray, max sure to shake it up real well or it will never camo and will be only one flat color. :coffeedrink:

Bush painted hammered black over por 15... and it scratches off. Will go over with flat or satin when I paint the tub.

I have gotten a little bit done. I need to figure out what wheel/tire combo I'm going with then get the measurements for the axle.

I'm picking up a M416 today and look forward to any tips you gather along the way. I hope to restore and mod it before summer, when I would like to camp with it. I will tow behind a JKU, and will probably replace the axle with hubs for 5 x5 pattern so I can swap spares. Not sure what and where to get yet though. Maybe I'll start my own build thread once I get her sorted out. Looking forward to see your progress though, since our build lists are similar.

Try this axle place
http://abctrailerparts.com/axles.html They only charge an extra $10 for custom length axles
I'm just trying to figure out what to do about the hub b/c I would like to run canyon wheels like the ones on my jeep

What wheels are you running on your TJ? I've got extra Eccos laying around.
