Finding a Camera

I think the LX5 meets your requirements...that is my next purchase...

Mine too. I'll trade a good wide angle for a long zoom because you can crop a 10MP image and still have decent resolution. And the low-light performance is impressive for a $400 camera. Shoots good video too. Wonder if there will be zoom adapters for the LX5 soon?

ah but one can not replace the image from a 10x zoom by cropping from a wide angle image. Telephoto compression:

If you want to enlarge a wide angle image, then cropping is fine.. but zooming-in optically is much more than simple enlargement.

Thoughts on the Sony HX1?

I fiddled with one today and it seems to do everything I need/want it to.....

Fiddling with one at a store is a great way to pick a camera, some just "fit" better than others. From the specs and reviews I saw on Amazon, it looks quite good. It is a few years old, but it will still do the job quite well I suspect.

See if you can take your own compatible memory card with you and take some pictures in the store. This would give you a limited test to see if the camera performs to your satisfaction for speed, shutter lag, ease of use, etc .... Take the memory card home and download the images and if you are satisfied, you may have found yourself a camera.

Did you look at Dpreview's super zoom group tests? It may help you.

I did, but not a single one had an auto pop up flash...

Not a bad idea. I am not sure if the security devices will let you do that, but it is worth a shot.

Here is your answer in one long post....ROFLMAO!!!

This is spot on and hysterical

From now on when someone asks this question, we should just provide this link http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2010/05/letter-to-george.html

Funny, but not really applicable.

I have no desire to become a photographer and don't particularly like carrying around a camera that won't fit in a cargo pocket.

However,

The wife wants better pictures of the kids and better performance than my Canon P&S, so here I am. I can guarantee that I will not buy a more expensive camera than the Sony HX-1 (inflation notwhithstanding)

Famous last words of EVERY photographer buying their 1st camera.

Let us know where you're at within a few years of buying which ever one you end up with.

If I was getting a all-around P&S, I'd probably go with the new Canon PowerShot SX30 IS - 14.1 Megapixel, 24-840mm zoom Equivalent!!!!
