Jeep enthusiast takes matters into own hands - http://JeepDieselPetition.com
=====================================================
"We need to show the decision makers at Jeep how serious we are about diesel power plants in the North American lineup." said self-confessed Jeep enthusiast Dan Grec after driving 40,000 miles from Alaska to Argentina in a Jeep Wrangler. Completing the epic journey in a completely stock Wrangler without a single mechanical failure speaks to the reliability and longevity of the iconic Wrangler platform.

Diesel engines are the last piece of the puzzle that would catapult the Jeep brand to the forefront of expedition vehicles, says Dan. Better mileage, longer engine life and enormous low-end torque are just a few of the real-world benefits that combine for amazing rock-crawling and all-important highway drivability.

It's no secret that Jeep assembles diesel-powered Wranglers and Grand Cherokees at the Toledo, OH plant - but these vehicles are destined for sale on the foreign market only. Until now, the decision makers at Jeep have been uncertain of the demand for diesel in the domestic market.

With this petition, Jeepers across North America can clearly demonstrate their demand for diesel engines.

I think Jeep is well aware that there are people in North America who would prefer a diesel powered Wrangler. However, there are costs associated with offering another engine option (emissions certification, parts availability, service staff training, and so on). And Jeep already sells all the Wranglers they can make. Chrysler is still in recovery mode from their bankruptcy, and the company doesn't have a lot of spare cash. Is Jeep losing sales to another company because they lack a diesel option? No.

My guess is that we won't see a diesel Wrangler until the European diesel emissions standards get to Euro VI in 2014. At that point, diesel emissions standards will be very similar in Europe, Japan and USA.

That said, a petition like this can't hurt (unless they're planning to sell your email addresses).

Interesting thoughts, and I tend to agree personally. Jeep probably aren't "losing" sales right now, because there is no other manufacturer with a diesel that we can all switch to.
My gut feeling is also that Jeepers are a pretty loyal bunch, and once hooked, we'll buy another one even if it's not exactly "perfect".
Maybe this will change if another manufacturer can get diesel to market first, or at least something that gets 25/30mpg.

As for selling email addresses, http://JeepDieselPetition.com doesn't collect them :)
(The only identifying information is "Name" and it's up to you how detailed you get - something like "Max M." or even "Mr. Jones" is perfectly fine)

P.S. If you're thinking about how easy it would be to sign the petition more than once, it's a little harder than you think ;)

I traded my JK and didn't buy another Jeep because of the engine issue.
I would have bought a diesel JK or a Hemi JK ---- wasn't interested in the Pentastar just on faith.

Joke's on me since I bought a Power Wagon though.

It's not a diesel, per se, for me. I wanted a certain amount of torque. Diesel preferred but I'll take it any way I can get it...

Funny enough, I'm in the same boat. I want the torque, and more importantly, I want the mileage. If I'm going to drive another vehicle 40,000+ miles again, 20mpg is simply not going to cut it.

Is the current diesel being offered to foreign markets all that great? I always hear about the hemi conversions, but I don’t read about many diesel conversions. I would think all the parts are there if Toledo, OH is making them and shipping overseas.

Just curious

Mileage would be nice but I settled for range. The Pee Dubb has a 34 gallon tank to compensate for its (Tantalus-like) thirst for fuel.
Yields a range almost twice as far as what my 2-door JK had.

I'd like to have a diesel option, but I expect that the "bean counters" will also recognize that alot of people will sign that petition who don't have the funds to buy a diesel should one exist. Looking on the internets, I'm finding that diesel accounts for just over 4% of the market in the US, with about 3% of that being big pickups. Predictions are that the market should grow to around 6% by 2015 with most of that being smaller European style cars.
Certainly the Jeep market is very loyal, but it is really true that with all the costs associated with building these, they would have to be really sure of the marketplace in order to recoup that investment. Don't know if a niche market really fits that bill.
I know as much as I would love to have one, there's no way. I can't even see buying a JK for as much as they cost now, and the diesel would be even more expensive.

Maybe if the engine were also going in other vehicles, like the European model? Wouldn't it make sense to put it in a 200 also? A minivan? Even a Durango?

Signed it. After selling my diesel 110, I'm ready to switch to the JKU platform but I'm not in the market until the end of 2012 when the 2013 models will be out. I hope we have a diesel option by then.

Hemi conversions are (sort of, depending on where you live) emission legal, since the engine comes from a same age or new emission-certified vehicle of the same weight class. The foreign market diesel used in the Jeeps isn't emission certified, and therefore not possible currently for a legal swap, which matters to those of us living in areas with emission testing.
