Trailer Project - Choosing a Trailer to Start (Help)

As it so happens, I have a clean spot in my garage that is just about the right size for a new project. Can't have a clean spot in the garage after all. Anyway, I love the idea of building a Camping Trailer. As much as I love the AT, Tentrex, etc... trailers, I don't want to spend that much money up front. Besides the M416 trailer, which I cannot find, can anyone point me towards a trailer mfg that makes something like the M416 trailer? Not looking for something already rigged, just a stripped down basic trailer. I am looking for something that is off-road capable if possible. Pulling the trailer behind a lifted 2008 FJ and lifted 2006 Toyota Tacoma. Both have 3" lift kits. I have my eye on a nice M101A2 trailer, but it seems a little big for what I wanted. Would love to hear other "starter" options as well.

We do sell DIY parts of our trailers so you can build your own. For instance if you just want a tub and fenders and maybe a lid and you will build the rest.
The Gen2 trailer fender to fender is 72" bottom tub dimensions 48"x72"

The Craigslist M101A2 trailer in Katy, TX is just down the street from my house. I'm thinking it's a little big for what I was looking for. It is a very nice trailer. The Sierra 4x4 trailer is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Search is over. Thanks again.

Try searching CL, MUD Classifieds, etc for a M101 CDN 1/4 ton trailer. This is a different beast than the US M101 3/4 ton. It's the Canadian updated/optimized version of the M416. They were built in 1992/1993, so are in much better shape than the typical M416.

Here's a couple of pics of ours, modified with new hubs and fenders to run the same 33" tires as our Land Cruiser.

They can be hard to find, but are definitely worth the search.

^^ agree with what said above. CDN M101 trailer. Extremely well built perfect size.. Here is mine, with 35", wider fenders and a RTT

And the pics together are an excellent illustration of how the M101 CDN can be built very easily.

The first pic shows an old set of 15" rims under the new fenders, supposedly from an FJ60, with about a 28" tire on. The hubs have been converted, though, to FJ pattern.

My second pic is with the 33" BFGs. This is about as big a tire as will fit under the trailer with the stock suspension. To go with any larger tires, you need to do all sorts of weird things with the fenders if you keep the axle on top of the springs.

The third pic by Rubicon_Fan shows how easy 35" tires fit with a simple spring-over. And bigger can be done, if you have the need.

For both our trailers, wider fenders are necessary to be legal in many states with anything approaching the sort of tires most of us tend to use offroad. The M101 CDN came with a set of very narrow tires that also fit the Iltis, a Canadian Forces VW-designed utility vehicle that was its prime mover in many cases, so there's not much else that the stock fenders cover. YMMV

Try Outlander Trailers in Sheridan, AR. Robert will build you a trailer as stripped down or loaded up as you want. I live in Little Rock, about a 45 minute drive from Sheridan, so I'm able to go down regularly to add new features and move stuff around. The way he puts them together, it's like an erector set. I can't say enough good things about my Outlander!
