So, right now I'm building a trailer and wanted to mount the tongue jack. I just wasn't happy with the options that I had out there. I didn't like the side mounted flange, it looked like an afterthought, and I didn't want a rigid mounted jack that wasn't able to fold out of the way.So I made my own. I figured that some of you would like this idea because I made it to be the same size as a 2x2 tubing. Here it is.
I first took apart the old jack. Then took 1 1/2 tubing for the outside (covers the threaded rod), 1 1/4 tubing for the leg that will be moving up and down. 2x2 square tubing for the gears.
Then I machined the threaded chuck, for the threaded rod, down to fit inside the 1 1/4 tube leg.
You can see the chuck in the leg tubing, and I cut the 2x2 square down to house the moving parts
these two photos show the difference in the old and new.
the old, 2" plus round
the new, more tight, no more play! 1 1/2" round
here I welded the bottom of the gears housing, this will be welded to the 1 1/2 tubing.
I put the gears inside to make sure everything works.
Made a little cover for the moving parts. You can see the tubing welded down below.
Here is the finished part. thinner and stonger than the old floppy one. Now it will fit under the tongue nicley. The old jack is fully extended and the new one is fully compressed.
Hope this helps out, this will allow you to make longer lengths that most of us need for these type of trailers!!!
