We sleep in the same quarters, however only use the propane tank to run a water heater for hot showers when rear doors are open (Ford E250). For warmth we use a Planar (run it on kerosene) heater that sits outside the van when in use, i.e. no combustion inside the van.

We always carry a 5 lb. inside the vehicle and use a brass valve cap as an extra precaution.

Unless prevented by weather, all our cooking is outdoors. Backup for bad weather is hot water from an electric kettle and a meal prepped inside a Backpacking Food Cozy Feed Bag. Nobody, including the dogs, would want to be in the van if I used a porta potti inside the van.
