Little late to respond. I have an early 99 as well and fit 285/75/18 Nokian on KMC wheels, no spacers. It has custom leaf springs approx. 2.5 in lift.

Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk from about a month ago. And nice and clean second day into the trip.

Where did you rent your 4Runner from? I rented one in Belize last year and toured around got down south to Punta Gorda also. Reason I asked, We were at a remtoe ruin and it wouldn't start popped the hood to fiddle around adn the battery cables were barely hanging on, just had to reconnect them.
